ApplicationsConverters are used in industry to adapt a signal to specific uses or to ensure compatibility between different systems.
TechnologiesElectrical converters carry out conversions between alternating and direct currents (DC/DC, AC/DC, etc.). They can also modify amplitude or frequency. They are designed to induce minimum losses, and often isolate the input from the output.
A/D converters convert analog signals into digital signals, while D/A units do the opposite. There is no energy transfer; only signal value is treated. Precision and speed are the goals. In other cases, conversion consists in changing medium. A converter can, for example, transform an electric line signal to optical fiber or radio-frequency form.
Converters also can change data format and protocol, and create gateways between the Ethernet and field buses or the GSM network. Some converters are multi-protocol. Converters are used in measuring to adapt a sensor's measuring signal to a communication medium. Galvanic isolation is often sought in such cases. Gender converters change (pin) connection fitting configurations.
