Incremental encoders have output signals that repeat over the full range of motion. When the incremental encoder is turned on, the position of an incremental encoder is not known since the output signals are not unique to any singular position.

The encoders contain a contact-less magnetic sensor system and a precision toothed wheel. The sensor’s magnetic field is modulated by the passing of the teeth of the measuring wheel.
The resulting sinusoidal and co-sinusoidal voltage is evaluated by the integrated electronic and converted to an incremental output and optionally to an additional analogue current output.
Advantages of the magnetic system:
* Unaffected by condensation on the measuring wheel and is therefore the preferred choice for applications, where ambient temperatures change or where the relative humidity is high. (e.g. outdoors)
* Unaffected by oil or dirt penetration.
* The steel measuring wheel is highly resistant to shock and vibration, unlike glass or plastic graduated discs in other systems.
* Excellent reliability over a very long life because it does not suffer from the ageing effect common to optical systems.

Incremental rotary encoders supply a certain number of pulses for each shaft revolution. Speed is measured by counting the pulses for a period of time. To calculate angle or the distance covered, pulses are counted starting from a reference point.
Dual channel quadrature output encoders feature two signal outputs that are 900 out of phase with each other. This permits the controller to determine direction of rotation and perform bi-directional positioning tasks.
In addition, three-channel incremental encoders have a third signal channel (known as “zero”, or reference, signal) that provides a single pulse for each revolution.

Magnetic rotary encoders
To meet the increasing demand for reliable, low cost, high-speed rotary encoding, Renishaw has introduced a range of OnAxis™ magnetic encoders.
These high-speed rotary magnetic encoders are designed for use in harsh environments, such as marine, medical, print, converting, industrial automation, metal working, motor control, and instrumentation.
The magnetic encoder range is designed and manufactured by RLS d.o.o. in Slovenia, Renishaw's partner in encoder technology.

Incremental encoder
Suitable for all applications where the basic functions of incremental position sensing is required.
The resolution of the hardware incremental encoder is set at TR, using a code disk with fixed number of pulses. These encoder are available with different sizes and of course with different mechanical connections such as solid shaft, hollow shaft, blind shaft or integrated coupling.
Housing options
For applications in explosion-risk areas, in aggressive media or in environments with heavy mechanical impacts on the encoder
Special housings such as EX-housing, stainless steel housing etc.

Incremental encoders
Solid shaft encoders
Incremental encoders generate a certain number of pulses per revolution. The number of pulses is a measure of the distance moved (angular or linear).
Hollow shaft encoder
Hollow shaft encoders are always used when reduced installation length is required or when precision is important where the drive is subjected to high acceleration.
Absolute encoders
Singleturn
Absolute encoders provide a specific numerical value (code value) for each angular position.
Multiturn
Multiturn encoders not only detect angular positions but also distinguish between several revolutions.

|
|
By converting shaft rotation into electronic pulses, encoders are used to electronically monitor the position of a rotating shaft. The encoder’s output pulses are counted and evaluated by a control unit to determine machine position and velocity, which provides exceptional accuracy and flexibility when controlling motion. The high mechanical and electronic operating speeds associated with optical encoders increase system speeds and accuracy, decrease cycle times, and boost overall productivity in the manufacturing environment. Autonics rotary encoders of various sizes and types offer high-quality and precise measuring of the operating position and speed of the rotating shaft, etc. for more precise control of the objects.

Incremental Encoders
At Cleveland Motion Controls, we offer a wide selection of Rotary Incremental Encoders, providing you numerous solutions for a wide range of position and control application requirements.
Many of our customers first find us because their old suppliers furnished them with off the shelf products. That way of doing business caused them to force-fit other vendors' products into their applications. Force fitting a product to a design limits the performance of an application.

MIG – Incremental magnetic pulse generator
STRÖTER has developed an „intelligent“ intermediate flange which considerably simplifies the measurement of speed and sense of rotation as well as the connection with coordinating
control systems. What was previously only possible with time-consuming assembly and addons to drive systems is now possible in an easy and economical way both in new and existing installations.
This MIG magnetic incremental rotary transmitter is designed as an intermediate flange which is simply installed between the motor and the machine flange. This makes the integration of incremental position encoders in drive systems much easier – no matter whether you use it for speed measurement, for positioning control, dosage control or for synchronisation control.
