Thermistors tend to be more accurate than RTD's and thermocouples, but they have a much more limited temperature range because of their marked non-linearity.
A Thermistor capitalizes on the fact that the electrical resistance of a material changes as its temperature changes. Thermistors rely on the resistance change in a ceramic semiconductor, with the resistance dropping non-linearly with a temperature rise.
Thermistors can be a low cost solution to temperature measurement. They tend to have large signal outputs and their small size permits fast response to temperature changes. UE Thermistors are used to measure temperatures from -45° to 260° C (-50° to 500° F)

The Omnigrad range of Temperature Products from Endress Hauser meets the high standards required by the process industry.
Omnigrad provides Endress Hauser quality in design, documentation, logistics and service in Temperature Sensors.
A Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD) is a temperature responsive device based on a predictable resistance change in the sensing element.
The EN 60751 standard specifies requirements for industrial Platinum resistance sensors and covers the Pt 100 thermometers.
The Pt 100 sensing element has a resistance of 100 Ohms at 0°C.
According to EN standard and most common industrial applications, the Pt 100 type sensors are used for temperature measurement and control in the range from -50°C to 400°C or -200°C to 600°C.
RTDs offer three main advantages:
high accuracy
excellent long-term stability
high signal output level which allows transmission over long distances without ancillary equipment.
Basic construction of Platinum resistance elements cannot be used directly in contact with process environments, hence the complete thermometers are built as assemblies which can withstand light, medium and heavy duty industrial conditions.
In general, the sensor assembly includes three components:
the resistance thermometer inset
the protecting tube (thermowell)
the terminal housing.

The probe sensing tip is constructed of copper alloy which is twenty times more conductive than stainless steel. The sensors react more quickly to changes and indicate tip temperature instead of stem temperature. The result is better accuracy in thermowells, bearings, and other installations.
- 0.250" diameter is recommended for use in thermowells.
- Copper alloy tip for fast response
- Accurate sensing to 260°C (500°F)
- Non-armor models can be user-shortened

Thermocouples can measure temperatures over wide ranges, inexpensively. They are very rugged, but they are not as accurate as RTDs and thermistors.
A thermocouple is basically two strips of wires of dissimilar metals. These metal wires are joined at one end and the voltage is measured at the other end. Changes in the temperature at the juncture induce a change in electromotive force (emf) at the other end. As the temperature goes up, this output emf of the thermocouple rises, though not necessarily linearly.

TC with protective armatures
Against chemically and mechanically harsh environments thermocouples are mounted inside protective armatures. The optimum design depends on the individual application.
The alternatives are straight thermocouples, angular thermocouples (preferred for salt baths, metal melting plants, etc.) and thermocouples with exchangeable measuring inserts.
The protection tubes are made of ceramic or metallic highly temperature-resistant materials. The thermocouples are available in different mounting techniques, e.g. screw-in, weld-in or plug-in, with connection flange, or other. |

Included in our thermowell series are standardized wells of threaded, ANSI flanged, Van Stone and Weld-in types.
Threaded wells are made in readily welded or brazed materials for installations requiring seal welding or brazing. The pipe thread provides the mechanical strength, the weld merely seals.
ANSI flanged wells consist of a bar-stock well which is permanently welded to a top quality flange. Standard construction uses primary "J" groove weld and a bevel groove secondary weld. Both welds are machined to produce a clean fillet. This double welded construction eliminates possibility of crevice corrosion since no open joints are exposed from either inside or outside the installation.
