Nd-Fe-B Magnets:
Wide range of shapes, sizes and grades for special applications, from the largest specialized Russian producer of permanent magnets.

Sintered neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) magnets, also referred to as "neo" magnets, have been commercially available since November 1984. They offer the highest energy product of any material today and are available in a very wide range of shapes, sizes and grades. Earliest use of neo magnets was primarily for voice coil motors (VCM's) in hard disk drives and this market still accounts for about 55% of total sales dollars. Other applications include high performance motors, brushless DC motors, magnetic separation, magnetic resonance imaging, sensors and loudspeakers.

This is the strongest magnetic material currently available. It is used in situations which demand a very thorough ferrous separation. Bakker Magnetics uses this material in systems for separating ferrous contamination from raw materials in which very small particles (μ range) are present or the types of steel to be extracted have weak magnetic properties. Neodymium magnets can also be used successfully for ferrous separation from viscous fluids. Neodymium is a rare earth material.

SAMARIUM COBALT MAGNETS
Samarium cobalt magnets were first commercially available about 1970. Two materials have been developed to-date: SmCo5 and Sm2Co17. These materials are stronger than ferrite and alnico magnets and became widely used in high output motors where weight and size are an issue. They were also introduced into sensor applications where temperature stability was of importance. While neodymium iron boron magnets have replaced samarium cobalt in many applications, samarium cobalt is still used where high temperature performance, excellent thermal stability or excellent corrosion resistance is required. They are available from the Swift Levick Magnets Division in arcs, rods, flats, blocks and many other custom shapes.

Sintered samarium cobalt (SmCo) magnets, available since the early 1970's, offer the designer a tremendous combination of extremely high magnetic properties, outstanding thermal stability and excellent corrosion resistance. These characteristics make SmCo the ideal material in applications such as servo-motors, pump couplings, and sensors, particularly where the magnet is required to operate at high temperatures, across a broad temperature range or in a corrosive environment.
The first alloy composition was SmCo5 with maximum energy products of about 18 MGOe (140 kJ/m3). Shortly after this development, an additional alloy composition, Sm2Co17 was developed by Karl Strnat. This was developed over time to provide over 30 MGOe (240 kJ/m3). Although processing of the 2-17 composition is more difficult, it also has the advantage of generally containing less Cobalt than the 1-5 composition. 2-17 is also corrosion resistant and more stable at very high temperatures. Both types are manufactured by Arnold Magnetic Technologies AG to satisfy specific customer needs. Arnold's brand name of samarium cobalt is Recoma™.

Molybdenum Permalloy, HI-FLUX® and SUPER-MSS® (sendust) powder cores are wound with magnet wire to make transformers or inductors. Maximum allowable energy dissipation for a given value of energy storage (inductance and current) or transformation (voltage and current), guide the selection of core material and size. Energy dissipation is usually specified in terms of maximum temperature rise, minimum efficiency or minimum Q value. Consider the following when choosing a core material.
- Molybdenum Permalloy Powder (MPP) cores provide the maximum Q and lowest core loss. MPP is the most stable core with respect to temperature and AC flux. It has the widest range of permeabilities and is considered the premium material for direct current output inductors of switched mode power supplies.
- HI-FLUX cores are a 50% nickel, 50% iron distributed air gap powder core. HF has up to 15,000 Gauss saturation flux density and core losses significantly lower than iron powder cores. These cores are ideal for switching regulator inductors, in-line noise filters, pulse and fly-back transformers applications. When used in applications with high DC current, HF cores can provide a reduction in inductor size as well as total cost.
- SUPER-MSS is an improved Sendust material, originally develped by Arnold Engineering. It is designed to replace iron powder by offering much lower losses, with energy storage capability higher than MPP. SUPER-MSS cores are an excellent choice for energy storage and filter inductor applications in switch mode power supplies. The DC bias characteristics of SUPER-MSS are also excellent compared to iron powder of similar permeabilities and size.
