Like the Hysteresis Brake, the Magtrol Hysteresis Clutch develops torque strictly through a magnetic air-gap, ensuring an absolutely smooth transmission of torque from the drive unit to the driven element. Designed to be powered without the use of brushes or slip rings, and being a pure hysteresis device, there is never any fear of contamination due to wear particles or leaky seals. This makes Magtrol Hysteresis Clutches and Brakes ideal for use in food processing and clean room environments.

For every application determine the TORQUE, MAXIMUM RPM, and for brakes, the BENDING MOMENT.
Then you can choose the correct shaft or coupling, and various accessories.
All important internal clearances are ground to tolerances of less than .025mm (.001 in). Magnet Assemblies (purple) surround our hysteresis disc (gold). When like poles face each other, they produce maximum magnetic saturation, forcing lines of flux to travel circumferentially through the hysteresis disc. This produces Maximum torque.
When opposite poles face each other, they produce minimum saturation of the hysteresis disc. The lines of flux travel right through the hysteresis disc. Combinations of adjustment angles between these two extremes gives infinite adjustability. Because there are no contacting surfaces, the setting can be maintained indefinitely.

Intermittent Drive Unit (IDU)
The Hilliard Corporation’s IDUs are packaged mechanical assemblies that produce precise intermittent motion – on demand – from a constantly rotating input.
IDUs feature a self-contained lubrication system, making them ideal for dusty, dirty, steamed or washed-down applications. The heart of these units is a Hilliard single revolution clutch. They are designed to provide up to 40 million cycles, with no accumulation of error in the stopping position.
When combined with an acceleration-deceleration unit (ADU), our IDUs provide smooth acceleration and deceleration through 360º - on demand.
Intermittent Drive Assembly (IDA)
Hilliard’s new IDA provides automatic control of intermittent motion from a constantly rotating power source.
This easy-to-install, self-contained package includes a solenoid-operated, single revolution clutch with anti-rollback and anti-overrun features. The rugged and proven, round-roller/cam-flat, single revolution clutch provides positive engagement at any point of revolution of the driving sleeve without slip, lag, or cumulative error.
Designed to replace and to provide greater life than wrap-spring assemblies, the Hilliard IDA is built to last through millions of cycles.

Get More for Less in E-Stop Braking — By Breaking from Convention
# 28 Torque Ranges
# Three Frame Sizes
# 6 Disc Configurations
High Torque, Low inertia Engineering
Innovators at low inertia brake engineering, Force Control Industries, Inc. reduces size and mass to deliver more of what you need from an E-Stop brake - fast acting response - while paring away what you don't want.
Compact, Action Packed Design
Highly compact, space efficient designs, Force Control Industries, Inc. E-Stop Brakes feature a small diameter, multi-stack brake stack. This minimizes cyclic inertia of the brake itself for faster stopping, while multiplying braking surfaces. The brake stacks are fitted with unique dry friction facing material rated for heavy duty performance. Exceptionally durable, the material provides a high-coefficient of friction for high stopping torque in a small package.
Purpose Built Design
Unlike general purpose brakes adapted for E-Stop applications, our purpose built design doesn't need to be large and heavy to dissipate high heat loads, because it isn't subjected to frequent braking cycles. You only need one stop per episode - but then with the fastest possible response time.
So, we designed our E-Stop Brake with small diameter, multiple discs for high braking torque with low inertia. It's the same formula we have applied for years in our high performance oil shear brakes.
Multiple springs provide fast response and balanced braking torque, plus enhanced safety factor in event of a broken spring.

Magnetic particle brakes and clutches are of simple design. Due to their size they produce a high torque compared to for instance hysteresis brakes. They are having two rotors (inner and outer) and an air gap between these two rotors where the magnetic particles are dispersed in. An electric current passing through the coil creates a magnetic field, which aligns the magnetic powder into the gap. The higher the current, the more rigid the connection between the inner and outer rotor becomes. The principle is the same for brake, clutch and torque limitor.
Advantages:
Noisless work
Torque directly proportional to current
Torque independant from r.p.m. (starting from 30 min)
Strong design, units are able to be used with steady slipping
High torque range to be controlled (approx 1:50)
Applications:
Braking
Torque control, torque limiting
Tension control at winding, unwinding
Starting clutch operation
Calculated braking and starting
of certain masses and inertias

The Model HC or HCD clutches are designed to be used in either an end of shaft or through shaft mounting configuration. Their compact size makes these units ideal for incorporating within a gear housing. Multiple speed transmissions use a variety of these units to effect fixed mesh speed changes, or they may be used as a stand alone device for disconnect service.

The Safegard series of overload clutches from Cross+Morse were developed to provide overload protection of high torque values with a compact unit. Directly interchangeable with other units in the market, this series offers low cost precision with minimal maintenance for a long reliable service life.
Safegard clutches are in two basic series, the Standard series, for optimum speed and torque, and the Mini series, for lower cost option on slower speed drives. Both series are also available as shaft couplings.
Four options of operation are available.
1. The basic Safegard CSF design, using ball driving system for high speed, non synchronous applications.
2. The Synchron CSY design, with roller drive for lower speed synchronous applications.
3. The Safe Lift CSL, also with roller drive, but remaining in constant drive, only indicating overload by axial movement onto the limit switch.
4. The Safebreak CSZ design where the unit is held on totally free running condition after overload and requires manual re-engaging

Magna Torque (MT) for Backstopping and Indexing
Hilliard’s line of overrunning clutches is economically priced and ideally suited for backstopping and gearbox applications. Custom designs and rapid prototyping are available.
Roller Ramp (MTR) for Clutch Couplings, Dual-Drive & Turning Gear
There is almost no wear during freewheeling operations in the Hilliard roller-ramp designed clutch because rollers are free to rotate between the outer member and the inner cam. Typical applications for this clutch are blowers, pumps, fans, conveyors and forming rolls.
Enclosed Overrunning Clutches
Hilliard’s enclosed overrunning clutch incorporates superior MTR design in a totally enclosed package. Designed for power transmission operations, this clutch is totally contained in a stationary housing for constant protection from hostile environments or washouts.
High-Speed Overrunning Clutches
The Hilliard high-speed overrunning clutch provides positive engagement and high torque on demand. Featuring a unique roller-ramp design, the clutch when engaged transmits power via the precision-machined cam and roller assembly connected to the input shaft. Typical applications include hydraulic, electric, and pneumatic turbine starters; turbine drives, and turbine auxiliary drives.
