Alternators are rotating electro-mechanical devices which convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. Alternators are often called AC electrical generators in industrial applications.
Alternators are used in a wide range of industrial applications:
- In industry, alternators are installed in hydroelectric power plants to convert the turbines' rotary movement into electricity.
- Alternators are also used on generator sets to convert the energy created by the diesel or gasoline engine into electrical energy.
- Ships use marine alternators to produce electricity on-board.
Alternators are constructed using a rotating magnetic core (rotor) and a stationary wire winding (stator). As the rotor turns, it creates a rotating magnetic field which induces an alternating voltage in the stator winding.
When selecting an alternator be sure to consider certain technical specifications such as:
- the number of poles (2-pole, 4-pole, etc.)
- input rotational speed (RPM)
- single-phase or three-phase AC voltage
- power output range (kVA)
- engine fuel type (diesel, gasoline)
