No One Protects Large Turbines like GE
The transducers in this category measure changes in machine case positions as they expand or contract, rotary or linear position of control valves, or wicket gate position on hydroelectric turbines. They are typically used in conjunction with other transducers as part of a Turbine Supervisory Instrumentation (TSI) package, designed to monitor all critical machinery parameters on large steam, gas, or hydraulic turbines used in power generation applications.
The 3300 XL Rotary Position Transducer (RPT)
This innovative transducer incorporates a proximity probe observing an eccentric cam. The changing gap between probe tip and cam corresponds to degrees of rotation, and is specifically designed for valve position measurements. It is a superior alternative to older potentiometer transducers which have poor reliability.

PRAS1: Contact-Free 360° Angle Sensor in Ultra-Compact M-12 Housing
ASM GmbH sets the new benchmark for angular position sensors with the new development of a magnetic angle sensor in a very compact M12 housing. The PRAS1 sensor provides absolute position measurement over full 360° sensing range and is part of the successful POSIROT® family of magnetic angular sensors. With only a 1/2 inch diameter and overall length of less than 2 inches, this small sensor saves space and can be installed in the tightest locations.
The contact-free and wear-free angular measurement of 0° to 360° is achieved by using a position magnet. PRAS1 has a typical resolution of 0.1° and yields an analog signal through the use of a D/A converter. Three different analog outputs are available: 4-20 mA, 0.5-4.5 V and 0.5-10V. The industrial housing is rated up to IP68.
With its dependable and rugged design, the PRAS1 angle sensor is well suited for angle monitoring in a wide variety of heavy duty applications such as factory automation equipment, variable valve controls, mobile working machines, etc.

Gill angle position sensors are ideal for monitoring angular position in applications where high dither life of the angle sensor is essential. All Gill angle sensors use inductive technology to sense the position of a metallic object which is mounted to the application. There is no contact between the sensor and the moving part which gives infinite dither life.
Gill angle sensors are fully sealed with no internal moving parts, ideal for applications subject to extreme environments where grime, moisture and vibration are factors.
All of the angle sensors below are capable of monitoring 0-45 and can be configured to operate over the exact measurement range required, giving the highest possible accuracy for each application.
Sensors suitable for Angular position applications are shown below. Please select the sensor which best suits your application to view technical specifications, dimension details and application ideas.

The combination of a coder with ends of the road in the same case increases the reliability and the safety of the machines, because of two independent checking circuits in the same case.
The coder integrated provided information uninterrupted of the movement in 5-30 VDC with a resolution from 100 to 5000 increments. The programmable ends of the road, the catch of origin are regulated freely with the position wished.
The adjustment of the ends of the road is very simple: the case is assembled on the machine, the machine is then led manually to its limiting position, the end of the road is positioned with a key of programming. This procedure is repeated for the other end of the road.
The case is well protects by its cap against dust or any external intervention; all the signals are cabled on a connector with the back of the case.
These cases can also be provided with potentiometers.
COMP' AUT will be able to best advise the customer in the choice of the case being appropriate for its application.

In industrial processes where liquids, air or gases are used valves serve for dosing and control. There is a wide variety of valve types, butterfly or ball valves being the most common quarter-turn types.
In large plants these valves are seldom operated manually. Mechanical actuation is normally done by separate actuators. The valve position must be monitored electronically. This is necessary to give feedback to the controller when a certain position (e.g. "open" or "closed") is reached and to monitor the valves centrally from a control room.
Mechanical switches are still often used for position feedback on the actuator shaft. For other solutions several proximity switches are used together with a switching target for position detection. Disadvantage of these solutions: Mounting is mechanically complex. During switch mounting the signal wires can be reversed when they are connected in the top-mounted junction box. Where there are temperature fluctuations condensing humidity leads to corrosion and thus malfunction.

Hall Effect Devices detect magnetic flux density (mainly produced by a permanent magnet) and are used in both movement and position sensing. By integrating the sensing element onto the same silicon as its control logic and interface circuitry, Melexis has produced sensor chips with various degrees of intelligence to suit most applications. Sensing the rotation of shafts (e.g. cam- and crank-shaft) in engine, monitoring movement in motors and actuators, sensing pedal, throttle and steering wheel position, Melexis Hall Devices offer a reliable, contactless method of movement and position detection.
Melexis is a technological leader for the design, development and testing of integrated Hall Effect Devices. Melexis Hall Effect Devices enable an optimal use of the smaller feature sizes of which semiconductor technology is capable today. Therefore, very sophisticated mixed analog-digital signal conditioning circuitry (such as Chopped Analog String, Digital Signal Processing Core, Microcontroller) can be integrated. Most of the devices can withstand the severe automotive conditions despite few external components.

The new SMAT continuously detects the position of the cylinder piston within a range of 50 mm. It has an analogue output with an output signal in proportion to the piston position. The integrated OOR (out-of-range) sensor indicates if the piston is outside the sensing range. The connection for evaluating the 0 … 10 V and/or the 4 … 20 mA signal is made directly to analogue inputs.
Typical areas of application in object detection are as follows:
Press-fitting, clamping, position sensing, workpiece replacement
In process monitoring:
Sheet metal handling/production, wear monitoring, quality inspection
- The installation direction of the SMAT in the slot can be chosen freely.
- Contactless measuring principle = wear-free sensing.
- Measuring range is always 50 mm, regardless of cylinder; reproducibility 0.1 mm.

Description:
These Hall-effect devices contain a monolithic integrated circuit which incorporates a Hall element, a linear amplifier, a threshold amplifier, and Schmitt trigger on a single Hallogic® silicon chip. Included on-chip is a band gap voltage regulator to allow operation with a wide range of supply voltages. These devices feature logic level output and provide up to 21 mA of sink current. This allows direct driving of more than 7 TTL loads or any standard logic family using power supplies ranging from 4.5 to 24 volts. Output amplitude is constant at switching frequencies from DC to over 200 kHz. The Uni-Polar turns on with a (logic level “0”) after a sufficient magnetic field from the south pole of a magnet approached the symbolized face of the device (Operating Point) and turns off (logic level “1”) after the magnetic field reached a minimum value. The Bi-Polar latch device turns on (logic level “0”) in the presence of a magnetic south pole and turn off (logic level “1”) when subjected to a magnetic north pole. Both magnetic poles are necessary for operation for Bi-Polar devices. This feature makes these sensors ideal for applications in noncontact switching operations, brushless DC motors and for use with multiple pole magnets.
Features:
- Designed for non-contact switching operations
- Operates over broad range of supply voltages (4.5 V to 24 V)
- Operates with excellent temperature stability in harsh environments
- Drive capability up to 7 TTL loads

The RACO path-sensory system has been specially designed for exactly positioning and switching off electro-magnetic actuators in the final position. Not only is the position ascertained unconventionally by electro-magnetic means (e.g., gear-shifting mechanism) while doing so but it will also be determined via a close-coupled magnetic field without any movement.
The EPS consists of a printed circuit board and a magnetic holder with the magnet. The electronic positioning sensor (EPS) is integrated into the device%u2019s supplementary casing (A) on the motor shaft's end of the servo-motor or in the device's supplementary box (D) on the coupling casing. The installation, commissioning (starting up), maintenance (servicing) and upgrading is simplified in comparison with a conventional design that has mechanical limit switches and a shift transmission which must be adjusted individually.

Magnetic Reed Switches
Magnetic reed switches are available on nearly all air cylinders offered with Ultramation Linear Thrusters. Reed switches are actuated by the close proximity of a magnet which is included within the cylinder as part of the piston assembly. A reed switch contains a normally open sealed reed that closes or makes in the presence of a magnetic field. The reed switch returns to the normally open state once the magnetic field is removed. Reed switches, both with and without LED position indicators, are used in the vast majority of applications where the magnetic piston briefly comes to rest at each end of the stroke.
