No One Protects Large Turbines like GE
The transducers in this category measure changes in machine case positions as they expand or contract, rotary or linear position of control valves, or wicket gate position on hydroelectric turbines. They are typically used in conjunction with other transducers as part of a Turbine Supervisory Instrumentation (TSI) package, designed to monitor all critical machinery parameters on large steam, gas, or hydraulic turbines used in power generation applications.
The 3300 XL Rotary Position Transducer (RPT)
This innovative transducer incorporates a proximity probe observing an eccentric cam. The changing gap between probe tip and cam corresponds to degrees of rotation, and is specifically designed for valve position measurements. It is a superior alternative to older potentiometer transducers which have poor reliability.

PRAS1: Contact-Free 360° Angle Sensor in Ultra-Compact M-12 Housing
ASM GmbH sets the new benchmark for angular position sensors with the new development of a magnetic angle sensor in a very compact M12 housing. The PRAS1 sensor provides absolute position measurement over full 360° sensing range and is part of the successful POSIROT® family of magnetic angular sensors. With only a 1/2 inch diameter and overall length of less than 2 inches, this small sensor saves space and can be installed in the tightest locations.
The contact-free and wear-free angular measurement of 0° to 360° is achieved by using a position magnet. PRAS1 has a typical resolution of 0.1° and yields an analog signal through the use of a D/A converter. Three different analog outputs are available: 4-20 mA, 0.5-4.5 V and 0.5-10V. The industrial housing is rated up to IP68.
With its dependable and rugged design, the PRAS1 angle sensor is well suited for angle monitoring in a wide variety of heavy duty applications such as factory automation equipment, variable valve controls, mobile working machines, etc.

Gill angle position sensors are ideal for monitoring angular position in applications where high dither life of the angle sensor is essential. All Gill angle sensors use inductive technology to sense the position of a metallic object which is mounted to the application. There is no contact between the sensor and the moving part which gives infinite dither life.
Gill angle sensors are fully sealed with no internal moving parts, ideal for applications subject to extreme environments where grime, moisture and vibration are factors.
All of the angle sensors below are capable of monitoring 0-45 and can be configured to operate over the exact measurement range required, giving the highest possible accuracy for each application.
Sensors suitable for Angular position applications are shown below. Please select the sensor which best suits your application to view technical specifications, dimension details and application ideas.

The MLX90609 Angular Rate Sensor is a full gyroscopic system. A single SMD package contains a high performance Silicon micro machined sensor with signal conditioning circuitry. It operates from 5V supply and is designed for demanding automotive applications. The MLX90609 delivers two output signals proportional to the angular rate parallel to the assembly surface. One of the output signals is in an analog voltage format (the output is 2.5V at zero angular rate and the full scale angular rate produces an output of 4.5V or 0.5V depending on direction of rotation) and the other one is in a digital SPI format.

ASM introduces new POSIROT® Magnetic 360° Angle Sensor
ASM GmbH has expanded its innovative line of POSIROT® angular position sensors with the introduction of a new magnetic angle sensor in a 20 mm (0.8 in.) flat, 36 mm (1.4 in.) diameter servo flange housing. PRAS2 is a dependable, contact-free and wear-free sensor that utilizes an external permanent magnet to measure complete angular position from 0° to 360° with a typical resolution of 0.1°.
PRAS2 models are available with three different analog outputs: 4-20 mA, 0.5-4.5 V and 0.5-10V. The angle measurement circuitry is shielded from external environment conditions. It has also been designed to be highly shock- and vibration-resistant.
With its low 20 mm (0.8 in.) height, this new compact model, PRAS2, can be quickly installed without requiring much space.
Since this sensor is in a rugged IP 68 stainless steel housing, it can reliably handle the toughest industrial environments and makes it suitable for many applications such steering and tilt angle measurement on mobile construction equipment.

The new 424Dxxx Angle Sensor from elobau features high precision paired with extraordinary robustness.
Depending on the model, it can execute angle measurements ranging from 20° up to a complete circle ranging from 0° to 359°.
The non-contact design provides exceptional reliability. The measurements are made with a magnetic field whose rotation is detected with a non-contact Hall sensor. Another benefit of this construction principle: the sensor does not require a limit stop. Thanks to its IP 67protection class, the sensor is protected against all effects of dust and water which may be present in industrial processes and in vehicles. Other features are short-circuit protection, electromagnetic compatibility as per DIN 40389 for automotive applications as well as high-quality and durable ball bearings for the rotating axis. Operating temperatures range from -25°C to +85°C (-13°F to +185°F).
The unit’s resolution of 0.1 degrees with a signal refresh rate of 300 Hz is evidence of it high accuracy. The angle sensor also features a highly homogeneous signal curve with a maximum linearity error of ± 1 percent. The analog output optionally ranges from 1 to 5 V, 4 to 20 mA or 0.5 to 4.5 V. With these features, the 424Dxxx Angle Sensor can be used for almost any mechanical or automotive engineering application.

AC operated Rotary Variable Differential Transformers (RVDTs) measure rotary position up to +/-60degs. Like AC LVDT’s they contain no signal conditioning and are therefore chosen for their smaller size and use in hostile environments.
Description: RVDTs incorporate a proprietary non-contact design that dramatically improves long term reliability when compared to other traditional rotary devices such as syncros, resolvers and potentiometers. This unique design eliminates assemblies that degrade over time, such as slip rings, rotor windings, contact brushes and wipers, without sacrificing accuracy. High reliability and performance are achieved through the use of a specially shaped rotor and wound coil that together simulates the linear displacement of a Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT). Rotational movement of the rotor shaft results in a linear change in the output signal, directly proportional to change in shaft angle, over ±60 degrees from the null position. The phase of this output signal indicates the direction of displacement from the null point. Non-contact electromagnetic coupling of the rotor provides infinite resolution, thus enabling absolute measurements to a fraction of a degree. The R30A and R36AS RVDTs are AC operated rotary transducers. AC excitation of 3 V rms results in a ratiometric AC output voltage that varies in direct proportion to the change in angular position of the transducer shaft.

The combination of a coder with ends of the road in the same case increases the reliability and the safety of the machines, because of two independent checking circuits in the same case.
The coder integrated provided information uninterrupted of the movement in 5-30 VDC with a resolution from 100 to 5000 increments. The programmable ends of the road, the catch of origin are regulated freely with the position wished.
The adjustment of the ends of the road is very simple: the case is assembled on the machine, the machine is then led manually to its limiting position, the end of the road is positioned with a key of programming. This procedure is repeated for the other end of the road.
The case is well protects by its cap against dust or any external intervention; all the signals are cabled on a connector with the back of the case.
These cases can also be provided with potentiometers.
COMP' AUT will be able to best advise the customer in the choice of the case being appropriate for its application.
