Ceramic balls are lighter, smoother, stiffer, harder, corrosion resistant, and electrically resistant. These fundamental characteristics allow for a wide range of performance enhancements in bearings. Ceramic Balls are particularly well suited for use in extremely harsh environments where high temperatures or corrosive substances are present.
Silicon Nitride (Si3N4) Series: A new material suitable for applications where high loads, high speeds and extreme temperatures are factors. Long life and the need for minimum lubrication makes this material perfect for harsh conditions. Si3N4 is anti-magnetic. Maximum useful temperature is 2552°F.
Alumina Oxide (AL203) Series: Resistant to most corrosive materials, however not recommended for environments containing hydrochloric hydroflouric acids or strong alkaline solutions. Maximum useful temperature is 3180°F.
Zirconia (Zr02) Series: Inert to corrosive materials, with the exception of hydrofloric acid and hot concentrated sulfuric acid. Maximum useful temperature 1800°F.

440C Stainless Steel Series Balls: A martenistic type steel used extensively in bearing applications that require hardness, dimensional stability, corrosion resistance and toughness. Resistant to fresh water, steam, oil, gas, perspiration, alcohol, blood and food stuff. 440 is also magnetic.
316 Stainless Steel Series Balls: Providing resistance to sulfurous acid compounds and other highly corrosive environments. 316 Stainless Steel is used in the presence of sulfuric, phosphoric and ascetic acids. It is the least magnetic of the 300 series.
304 Stainless Steel Series Balls: An austentistic, unhardened stainless steel with excellent resistance to corrosion by oxidizing agents, most organic checmicals, food stuffs and sterilizing solutions.
302 Stainless Steel Series Balls: Extremely corrosion resistant to oxidizing solutions and organic compounds in an unhardened state. In its annealed condition it withstands attacks by food stuffs, sterilizing solutions and nitric acid. Not recommended for sulfuric or halogen applications, and is slightly magnetic.
52100 Chrome Steel Balls: Contains chromium and has excellent surface quality and high load capability due to thorough hardening. 52100 Chrome Steel is a universal material for many applications.

CERBEC Balls are made from two types of silicon nitrides made by Saint-Gobain Ceramics: NBD200 and SN101C. Both are qualified by bearing companies worldwide and meet all the essential requirements of a bearing grade silicon nitride. They are both fabricated using glass encapsulation HIPing which assures 100% density, high beta phase content, micron-sized grains, and minimal levels of glass phase. The attached TABLE 1 shows the typical properties for NBD200 and SN101C silicon nitrides.

Ceramic balls are particularly suited to harsh environments. Their main advantages over steel is that they have a density of 40% lower than steel. Have 29% lower thermal expansion and are 150% harder. In certain high-speed applications their life is extended by as much as a hundred times. The three main materials used are Alumina Oxide, Zirconia Oxide and Silicon Nitride.

CERBEC balls are known worldwide for their extremely smooth surface finish. Our manufacturing process is totally dedicated to Si3N4 finishing. This focus yields surface finish typically < 0.10 micro inch (< 0.003 micron) consistently from batch to batch for the tens of millions of balls we produce annually. Reduced bearing friction from Si3N4 is a function of smooth surface finish - it must be done right all at the time. CERBEC balls have over 10 years' history of superior surface finish.

For bearings, a silicon nitride must have certain important characteristics to work properly – in other words, not just any silicon nitride will meet the requirements of bearing performance. There are relatively few silicon nitride’s on the market that are qualified by bearing companies worldwide. Saint-Gobain makes CERBEC balls from (2) qualified silicon nitrides: NBD-200 and SN-101C which are described below.
