A bevel gear transmits movement between two non-parallel shafts. Instead of cylinders, it uses conical pitch surfaces whose common apex represents the point where the rotational axes of the two wheels meet.
This type of gear is found in engineering and the automobile industry, among many others.
There are three types of bevel gear. Those with straight teeth are very simple to use and suitable for high rotational speeds, but generate vibrations and noise. Gears with spiral teeth can operate at very high speeds with less noise and better transmission. Hypoid gears offer greater reduction ratios. The larger contact surface between the elements increases transmission. Their axes are at right angles but do not intersect, in contrast to helical gears.
Choice will depend on pitch surface diameter, the transmission and reduction ratios, pressure angle, load, torque, speed and other factors.
