A buzzer, or beeper is an acoustic transducer. It produces a characteristic sound when activated by AC or DC voltage and functions as a notification or alarm device.
A beep may indicate a successful input action or the end of a process. Buzzers can be mounted on control panels and electrical boxes. Similar technology is found in some sirens. Piezoelectric models can be used to generate ultrasound signals for distance measurements.
The buzzer's sound depends on the frequency of the input signal. However, a piezoelectric buzzer works at a particular resonant frequency, limiting the range of emitted sound. Self-oscillating models include their own electronics and emit a specific tone when activated by a standard AC or DC signal. Some have additional leads, giving them multiple sound capability. The tone may be continuous or intermittent.
The buzzer is soldered to a circuit board, built into a panel, mounted on a wall or to a DIN rail. It may have an LED or a button. Certain siren-type buzzers amplify the sound via a horn.
Choice will depend primarily on voltage, degree of protection and loudness in decibels at one meter.
