A CCD camera is a digital camera with a Charge Coupled Device sensor.
Because of their high pixel count, CCD cameras enable one to monitor sites and recognize objects. They produce very high-resolution imagery.
The camera's main component is the CCD sensor. It converts an image into an electrical signal. Each pixel of the CCD matrix is composed of a small capacitor which is charged with electrons when struck by photons. Each pixel is thus characterized by a charge proportional to its illumination. The charge is then read line by line by a specialized device.
When high-resolution and high-quality imagery is required, a CCD camera is preferable to a CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) camera. Furthermore, new intensified (ICCD) and electron-multiplying (EMCCD) sensors offer significant gain and allow fast exposure times and high-speed recording.
