Abrasive belts and discs in various dimensions, grit types, and backing are available. Finishes from mirror to grain are possible. Material removal rates from slight to rapid and heavy are possible provided the proper abrasive, backing, surface speed, and equipment are selected. Consult with the factory for specific applications.

Belts are used in multiple applications from fine finishing of stainless steel coil to heavy stock and weld removal. In general heavy weight Y weight belts are used for stock removal whilst flexible J weight belts are used for fine finishing and contour work. In fact J weight materials are not available in coarse grits (coarser than 60).

File, Portable, Benchstand and Backstand
Some cross-classification exists. For alternate machine types, look for the correct size listings under Benchstand and Backstand belts. Additional closed-coat sizes, types and grits are available as specials.

Belts can be used for all grinding and sanding processes, e.g. with a contact shoe, on the unsupported belt or with a contact wheel, and are distinguished by their high tearing resistance and optimum tensile strength. Heavy, robust, X or Y cloth backings are used for flat surfaces. The machining of flexible parts needs lighter, more flexible backings of J, F or E grade cloth which adapt to the curvature of the workpiece. Belts are used in a multitude of lengths and widths on a whole series of machines. VSM offers belts in numerous sizes for the machining of surfaces.

VSM series made of aluminium oxide are tough and very hard. Aluminium oxide is a universal grain for the machining of metal and wood surfaces.

For applications involving the dry machining of stainless and high-temperature steels we recommend using TOP SIZE products. Milltronics weighfeeders from Siemens can improve the accuracy of processing, blend consistencies, accountability, and record keeping. All weighfeeders come standard with a belt weigh bridge and speed sensor. An integrator is required to complete the system.
The weighfeeder is used to deliver an accurate mass flow rate of material. In the majority of applications, material is profiled by an adjustable mechanical shear gate, which fixes the correct material bed depth for a given particle size.
The feed rate is then maintained and adjusted by varying the speed of the belt. However, in some cases the belt speed is constant with rate control (if any) done by a pre-feeding device.
The system consists of three components: weight and speed sensing, integration and control, and the mechanical conveying system.
Using the belt load and the belt speed signals, small incremental totals of weight per time are measured by the integrator and then the flow rate is calculated. The measured flowrate is compared against the desired flowrate and the on-board PID controller makes necessary corrections to the belt speed.

Metalfab's APB Volumetric Belt Feeder features a ruggedly built, sliding belt assembly designed for highly accurate metering of all types of powders, pellets, and agglomerates. Troughed belt conveyors with horizontal curves were brought to industrial use by BEUMER. Because of their curved routing and minimum curve radii, these systems offer a low-cost alternative to systems, made of straight-line units with transfer points.
