A spectrophotometer measures light intensity as a function of wavelength. By measuring the spectrum of reflected light, it allows a more precise determination of an object's color than with a colorimeter using three sensors (red, green, blue).

Bench spectrophotometers are used in lab work, while portable models are found in field testing and measurement. The most common of the various possible measurement configurations are 0°/45°, integrating sphere and multi-angle.
