The Bare Compressor unit consists of cylinders and cylinder heads, fitted in V configuration on a crankcase. Valve flats are provided in between the cylinders and cylinder heads along with stainless steel finger type valve plates to perform air suction and discharge operations. Disc valves are provided for 15 HP models.

'H' series compressors are used for Air or Nitrogen compression. Each compressor is an air-cooled, single acting, three or four stage-reciprocating piston compressor with the combination of oil pressure fed crankshaft bearings, and cylinder oil splash with regulated injection for the final high-pressure piston plunger design.
Performance with inert gases, such as Nitrogen, ranges from 10 to 150 Nm^3/h within a final pressure range of 100 to 350 bar including the Sauer unique NitroFlex integrated 'all-in-one' - Compressor, generator and gas booster.
'W' series compressors are oil-lubricated, single acting water-cooled piston compressors for air or inert gas compression in two or three stages from 10 to 100 bar with gas flow-rates from 65 to 400 Nm^3/h.
'LB' series inert gas boosters are dedicated nitrogen gas boosters that can accept suction pressures from 4 to 14 bar to deliver gas to a maximum of 40 bar. This single stage gas booster range is the result of years of trouble-free experience with the 'L' range.
'L' series compressor/boosters offer a wide range of gas flow-rates from 10 to 400 m^3/h at pressures to 40 bar in two or three stages based upon the established marine diesel air-start Sauer range of two and three stage oil-lubricated, piston compressors. Elgi is the first and only Indian manufacturer chosen by Indian Railways for indigenization of compressors for GM ( General Motors) Locomotives. The newest compressor developed for Indian railways is the RR66101 W, a two stage W type reciprocating compressor with forced lubrication and water-cooled stages. The compressor has a discharge pressure of 140 psi and a free air delivery rating 190 cfm at 900 rpm.
The complete design and development was done in-house in compliance to DFSS specifications. Three compressor have been validated for 3000 hours of continuous running as a part of the functional qualification test. Further, three compressors have been validated over a period of 50 hours running under the temperature of 80 degree celsius to satisfy the operating environment specifications. The Indian Railways has placed an order worth Rs.30 million for the supply of water-cooled compressors.
