The majority of components connected to a backplane are connected using solderless pressfit technology. Two-row power taps featuring either an elastic pressfit zone or soldering termination were developed by ERNI for connecting power supply lines. Cable plugs or terminal sockets can be optionally used for cable termination.
The power taps can either be connected via screw or plug-type terminals with cable lugs or flat terminal sockets. For versions featuring 6 pins, the max. current is 30A at 20°C ambient temperature. Versions featuring 10 pins can withstand 40A at 20°C.

Winchester Electronics' High Density Plus® (HD+) product line is an all-inclusive backplane connector system consisting of signal, power, guide, and polarization modules. All backplane connector modules are sold individually, while daughtercard modules are mounted onto an extruded aluminum stiffener and sold as "stiffener assemblies." The ability to stack a variety of modules next to one another allows OEM designers to create custom connector configurations using standard off-the-shelf components.
Contact centerline spacing for HD+ signal modules is a .100 x .100 inch grid. Backplane pin connectors contain robust .025 square inch pins, which are less likely to be damaged during assembly, handling, and mating than many of today's higher density backplane connector systems. Backplane pin connectors are available in solder tail or with Winchester's proven, reliable, and industry leading C-Press® compliant pin technology.
Signal modules are available as 3- or 4-row modules with either 15 or 20 positions per row. For applications that require improved electrical performance, signal modules can also be supplied with 1 or 2 additional contact rows that help to:
- Minimize reflections due to impedance mismatches.
- Reduce cross talk between adjacent signal contacts.
- Minimize inductance of contacts used for power and ground.
- Integrate power distribution into the backplane.

SI - Side Interface Board-To-Backplane Connector Overview
In years past, low frequency transmissions could absorb the difference between the connector parameters and the PCB. As data transfers and rise times push into the gigabit range, signal ringing, jitter and edge rate profiles break down the signal quality to unacceptable levels. Side Interface refers to a revolutionary PCB technology. SI allows the inner layers to exit through the actual side of the PCB (represented by the thickness dimension). This provides a flat mating surface for the HXC125 contact. The advantage of this technology is that you keep the signal within the PCB for greater period of time. By staying within the "Controlled Impedance Environment" longer, there is less disturbance to the signal. This short interconnect distance eliminates the large electrical interruption one would see in traditional two piece connectors.

CompactPCI is an open bus architecture based on the Peripheral Component Interconnect specification (PCI) for desktop computing. The growing demands of commercial and industrial computing require more robust form factors, which have lead to the development of CompactPCI. The CompactPCI specification was developed in 1994 by an industry standards group, PICMG (PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group), and uses industry standard components with high-performance connectors to maximize system performance for rugged applications.
Today, PICMG consists of 650 member companies that continue to work together to improve and expand upon the performance of CompactPCI. Winchester Electronics is an Executive Member of PICMG and is actively involved in the continuing development of high performance products to support CompactPCI applications.

CompactPCI specifications are controlled and managed by PICMG, a consortium of over 650 member companies that work to maintain and improve CompactPCI specifications.
CPCI Connectors
The Winchester MetCon-2 product line consists of 9 different module styles, available in right-angle sockets and vertical pin headers with press-fit terminations. Each module provides 5 rows of signal contacts and 2 rows of optional ground contacts. Pin headers are available with 12 different contact options - 3 mating lengths on the primary side of the connector, each available in 4 different tail lengths. Pin contact tail lengths include a 3.7mm press-fit tail for "feed-to" applications and 13mm, 14.5mm and 16.0mm extended tails for "rear plug-up" applications. This variety provides design engineers with the versatility to differentiate signal, power, and ground on both mating sides of the headers, which is necessary for "hot-swap" applications.
