The digital refractometer measures the concentration of a solute by analyzing the refraction index of the solution.
Digital refractometers are used in the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, chemical, petroleum and other industries. Manufacturers offer models adapted to many different products. They also are commonly used to test the sugar content of wine grapes, fresh fruit, juices, etc. Other uses include testing industrial fluids, such as glycol, battery acid, engine coolant, etc.
Digital refractometers operate on the same principle as optical types, but they are automatic. An internal LED light source illuminates the prism on which several drops of sample have been placed. A matrix of photodiodes reads the refractive shadow and the result appears on a screen. They exist in both bench-top and portable models. They include a Peltier-effect temperature control feature because refractive index varies with temperature.
Choice will depend on intended use, since different models are designed to analyze different solutions (food industry, petroleum products, etc.).
