Today the modern drum motor is considered to be one of the most reliable and effective belt conveyor drives available throughout the world. The Drum motor is in simplistic terms a highly efficient geared motor drive, which is totally enclosed, in a steel cylindrical shell. The shell, which is normally crowned to ensure central belt tracking, is fitted with bearing housings incorporating precision bearings; oil seals and rotates on a shaft. The motor stator is fixed to the shaft and the motor winding cable passes through one end of the shaft, eliminating the need for slip rings and brushes.
The squirrel cage motor manufactured in laminated steel is machined concentric to high tolerances and designed to give 200% starting torque. The rotor pinion is coupled directly to the gearbox. The gearbox transmits the drive directly to the shell bearing housing through a geared rim and provides a high efficiency from motor to drum face with very little frictional losses. All gearing is made of high alloy steel, not plastic. The BDL drum motor is lubricated for life and needs no oil change. The result, almost no maintenance or downtime, which means lower costs and higher productivity.

Conveying and friction accumulating via radial friction clutch between drive unit and slide bush (one-sided friction). The driving force of the roller is load-depending, it sets itself automatically. Friction roller series 3800 and fixed driven rollers series 3500 have the same dimensions. They can thus be combined easily with each other and also be retro-fitted with the other drive types (friction/fixed drive). Rollers series 3800 are based on the universal roller series 1700, e.g. roller housings of the roller series 1700 are to be found on the non-driven side. The drive elements are optionally available in plastic (Sprockets - Polyamid 6.6, Toothed pinion - POM) or steel. Sprockets made of plastic are non-abrasive, tough elastic and noise damping. Sprockets made of steel are precision turned with precise teeth. The maximum load capacity of the roller is directly dependent with the amount of accumulation during the whole operational time.
