ApplicationsThese capacitors are used in electronic systems to store energy, to smooth input voltage variations or to delay the cutting off of power to a circuit. They are seldom used for filtering because of their significant resistance.
TechnologiesThe anode of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is an aluminum band covering a layer of aluminum oxide, which is produced by electrolysis the first few times the device carries current. This constitutes the dielectric insulating layer and is connected to the cathode by the electrolyte. These capacitors are available in models from one uF to 10 mF.
The anode of a tantalum electrolytic capacitor is made of sintered tantalum. It is more compact and offers better frequency performance than aluminum models. It is available in values from 0.1 uF to 47 uF. It can use a solid (manganese dioxide) or liquid (conductive gel) electrolyte. It is more reliable but experiences greater current loss and is more expensive.
Electrolytic capacitors must not be connected backwards and are intolerant of voltage spikes.
Choice will depend on needed capacity, tolerance, operating voltage, series resistance, leakage current and type of mount.
