Your suggestions for improvement:
An electromechanical relay is an electrically controlled switch. When its coil is energized, the induced magnetic field shifts the movable contacts, which are galvanically insulated from the control elements.
ApplicationsThese devices are used for signal amplification and power line switches. The closed contact has very little resistance, while that of the open contact is very large. Despite problems of wear and contact bounce, they are very common in electrical engineering and automation.
TechnologiesContacts are either normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC). Terminal markings indicate common, open and closed positions. Some relays are multi-pole. For example, a double-pole/double-throw (DPDT) unit has eight terminals, including the coil, which can be energized by AC or DC power.
Monostable relays have a spring which returns the contacts to the open position when power is turned off. The contacts of a bistable relay remain in place even when power is cut. A repeated or reversed command, or a second coil returns them to their previous position.
High-power relays are sometimes called contactors. Miniature relays are used with weak currents. There are also semiconductor relays with no moving parts.
Choice will depend on switching voltage, maximum current, interrupting capacity, number of poles and contact type.
- Galvanic insulation
- Wide choice of power ratings
- Mechanism subject to wear
- Contact bounce and wear
