A fall arrest is a movable device used on a rope, usually braided. It often has a double locking mechanism to prevent faulty attachment to the rope.
Fall arrests are used primarily as safety devices when working at height.
The fall arrest is activated by sliding along a braided rope. As soon as it slips and/or its descent speed accelerates quickly, its jaws clamp shut on the rope. This keeps the user safely suspended at height. The mechanism reacts very rapidly without any disagreeable tearing noise. It also rapidly absorbs much of the shock of the fall.
Choice will depend on specific application and the user's morphology. The fall arrest should meet applicable standards.
