Filter cartridges remove undesirable particles from fluids, either liquid or gas. Most must be periodically replaced, though some can be cleaned and reused.
These devices are used to purify machine oils, fuels and gas. They also remove microorganisms from pharmaceutical products and are employed in water treatment.
Industrial models filter fluids of varying viscosity, including liquefied gases, oils and fuel oil. Degree of filtration is determined by the size of retained particles, from less than 10 to several hundred microns. Unlike pleated paper filters, corrugated steel wire and steel wool filters remain effective even when impregnated with steam or oil.
The nylon, propylene and fiberglass cartridges are used in the pharmaceutical industry for sterilizing products or biological fluids. They can be used to remove microorganisms, fractionate blood plasma and extract serum. Some filters can withstand exposure to solvents and high pH values. Others are intended for the filtration of technical gases.
Water-treatment filters may contain activated carbon, which absorbs contaminants and suspended particles, or be used to remove minerals through reverse osmosis ultra-filtration.
