Formwork is a temporary installation used in construction to maintain concrete in a particular configuration until it sets up. The wall of the formwork can also give surface texture to concrete that will be visible.
Formwork consists of panels, reinforcing and attachment hardware to give poured concrete a particular configuration. Wall formwork is used to create straight walls. Circular formwork yields curved walls. Column formwork is used to create cylindrical or rectangular posts. Slab formwork serves to create floors. Climbing formwork vertically extends the concrete by resting on structural elements already in place.
Choice of formwork depends on the desired configuration, the surface characteristics of the panels, its mechanical resistance to the pressure of the concrete, its modularity and its ease of installation.
