Ball mills are used primary for single stage fine grinding, regrinding, and as the second stage in two stage grinding circuits
Grinding of materials in a tumbling mill with the presence of metallic balls or other media dates back to the late 1800's. Since that time, Metso
Minerals and its predecessor companies, MPSI, Sala, Marcy, Hardinge, Kennedy Van Saun (KVS), Denver Equipment, Allis Chalmers, Boliden
Allis, and Dominion Engineering, have designed and manufactured more than 8,000 grinding mills.
Metso overflow ball mill sizes range from 5 ft. x 8 ft. with 75 HP to 26 ft. x 41 ft. with 20,000 HP.
Normal feed size to a Metso Minerals ball mill is 80% passing 1/4" (6mm or finer) for hard ores and 80% passing 1" (25mm or finer) for soft ores.
Product size is typically 35 mesh or finer.
Operation
Ball mills operate either in open or closed circuit. Open circuit operation is best utilized when:
Another stage of grinding follows the mill
Reduction ratio is small
Feed material is already fine and one pass through the mill produces the desired results
Product size control is not critical and oversize material can be tolerated in the product

General Purpose - HM Series Supermill - Designed primarily for discrete pass operation with medium to large grinding media size. This series is available in chamber sizes from 0.75 to 200 liters, with a capacity range from about 1.0 GPH to 900 GPH on average. The most economical mill selection offered by Premier, but has a limited range of applications related to the size of the grinding media required for processing. The HM Series can operate well over a wide viscosity range, and is generally used in 1 or 2 pass grinding applications with media size of 0.8mm or larger. There are various options to the HM including stationary front screen, and various materials of construction including plastics, ceramics and composites to suit particular applications. Standard type milling discs, or patented AP type high energy milling discs can be used to optimize mill performance. The basic HM design with Internal Rotating Screen has proven to be a "WORKHORSE" in general purpose media milling applications for over a quarter century

Cutting mills are particularly well suited for comminution of soft to medium-hard, fibrous or tough materials (including plastics). They are frequently also used in the preparation of heterogeneous substance mixtures and for sample preparation for RoHS and WEEE analysis. In this type of mill, samples are comminuted through cutting and shearing. The fineness is determined by a sieve insert.
Various knife geometries and replaceable blades ensure maximum flexibility and durability. Grinding parts of various steel types as well as of hardmetal tungsten carbide can be used for controlling the abrasion problems.
All grinding parts can be removed for cleaning in just a few seconds without tools – unbeatable fast, simple and efficient!
YOUR ADVANTAGES WITH FRITSCH CUTTING MILLS
- Especially simple operation for fast work
- Unmatched ease of cleaning thanks to patented quick opening facility
- Optimum airflow for particularly fast grinding and secure protection against clogging
- More stable running and low wear due to the patented double cone bearing of the rotor

The FRITSCH Disk Mill is most suited for size reduction
within the medium particle size range. Comminution takes
place through pressure and shearing force.
|
|
|
Beater mills are suitable for medium-hard, brittle or less temperature-sensitive samples (including plastics) due to the high grinding energy. The material is comminuted through impact and collision forces. For control of the wearing and abrasion, rotors of titanium or with a titanium nitride coating can also be used in place of hardened steel. Similar to the cutting mill, the fineness is determined by a sieve
