This Universal Hardness Tester with its excellent price/performance ratio is used for both: classical hardness tests on metals and for the testing of plastics, in particular.
It works, for example, according to the Rockwell R, L, M, á(alpha) test methods and determines the ball indentation hardness. All conventional optical hardness test methods (Vickers, Brinell, Knoop) and the depth measurement method (Rockwell) can also be carried out in compliance with the standards within a load range from 1 to 250 kg.
The essential features bearing out the quality of the machine are its ease of operation, an outstandingly large test area, the measurement without parallax error (with the lines of measurement being integrated in the ground-glass screen optics), a fully automatic test sequence, and the use of a high-precision closed loop system. Another plus is the extraordinary depth of focus. With the RS232 connection to the test software testXpert®, all tests can be evaluated and documented. For example, data can be transferred to quality assurance systems for further processing.
Customized accessories for a large range of applications are available to the customer.

These portable hardness testers are the worldwide standard for measuring rubber, plastics, and other resilient products.
- Small enough to fit into any pocket
Instruments consist of a spring loaded indentor that is pressed into the sample, giving a relative analog or digital reading of hardness on a 0 to 100 scale.
Various models are specific to the sample being tested. The selection guide below shows the different models with their applications. Generally, readings below 10 or above 90 are considered unreliable; in these instances the next appropriate scale should be used.
Several factors can influence the results obtained with durometers, such as:
- The rate at which the durometer is applied to the test specimen
- The force used in applying the durometer
- The elapsed time between when the durometer is applied and the time that a reading is taken
- The temperature of the test specimen
For the above reasons, several measurements should be taken and averaged on each sample in order to obtain reliable results. Also, when dealing with two party testing, care should be taken to normalize test conditions.

WESTport Brinell Master Test Blocks are used to calibrate portable, bench and production Brinell hardness testers. Each Brinell test block is heat treated in a computer-controlled vacuum heat treat furnace to insure maximum consistency and repeatability. They are then blanched; ground, hand lapped and diamond polished providing you with impressions that are easy to read with precision accuracy.
Brinell test blocks are calibrated with five impressions and certified in accordance to ASTM E-10 and ISO 6506 on hardness testers calibrated and traceable to NIST. The arithmetic mean of the five impressions is inscribed on the block both in BHN Hardness and diameter in millimeters. Each Brinell block is calibrated with Tungsten carbide indenters. HB30 designates 3000 kg / 10 mm ball - the most common Brinell scale, HB5 designates 500 kg /10 mm ball and HB15 designates 1500 kg / 10 mm ball.
