An in-line reducer has coaxial input and output shafts. Any type of reducer, even those with perpendicular input and output shafts (worm, bevel, etc.), can be made coaxial by the addition of a transfer gear. However, planetary gear reducers are favored in applications requiring an in-line arrangement since they are coaxial by design.

Technologies

All varieties of gear reducer are possible: worm, bevel, planetary, helical, cylindrical, etc.

How to choose

Choice will depend on the speed and torque of both the input and output shafts. These data will determine the gear ratio. Another factor is the relative orientation of the two shafts: in-line, parallel, perpendicular, coupled or not.
