How to choose this product

An infrared (IR) sensor detects infrared radiation. Passive models read infrared waves emitted by an object, while active devices emit an infrared signal and react to the portion reflected by the object.

Applications

Pyrometric sensors are found in metallurgy, foundries, glass factories, cement plants and combustion furnaces. Infrared gas detectors are used for industrial safety, emissions control, in the petrochemical industry, explosives detection and analysis of city gas. Infrared cameras are used for fire prevention and thermography. IR sensors can also serve as presence and motion detectors.

Technologies

A pyroelectric infrared sensor rapidly measures the surface temperature (-50° to 3000° C) of an inaccessible or moving object without physical contact. While it is not subject to wear or corrosion, the optics must be kept clean to prevent loss of precision due to dust or smoke. It may be mono- or bi-chromatic, the latter correcting errors due to the constituent material of the target surface.

The IR gas sensor measures the concentration of one component of a gaseous mixture: methane, carbon dioxide, an explosive gas, etc. It bounces two infrared rays off a reflector, one of which is partially absorbed by the gas in question. The unabsorbed ray serves as a control. Certain models also can be used to analyze liquids.

How to choose

Choice will depend on the temperature range to be covered, the material under study, response time and required accuracy.
