Distributed Feedback (DFB) Diode Lasers are fixed wavelength single mode diode lasers. Typical geometrical sizes of the laser chip are 1000µm x 500µm x 200µm (length x width x height). The laser chip is grown by MOVPE of compound semiconductor material. The optical gain is provided by double heterostructure which include several Quantum Wells for electronic confinement. Typcal emitter width range between 3µm and 7µm. The single mode emission is enforced by a Bragg grating with the laser chip. The surfaces of the laser chip act as cavity mirrors due to the difference of the refractive index of the laser material and the surrounding air. The rear facet of the laser chip is provided with a high reflection coating. The front facet of the laser chip is provided with a high quality antireflection coating for avoiding the Fabry Perot modes of the laser chip. Distributed Feedback (DFB) Diode Lasers are available at almost any wavelength between 760nm and 2800nm.

635nm Red Laser Diodes Improve Energy Efficiency In Industrial And Medical Applications
Photonic Products, the UK optoelectronics device manufacturer and laser diode specialist, announces the introduction of two new 635nm, 5mW laser diodes from Opnext, Inc. The operating current on these diodes has been decreased by 50 percent, resulting in extended battery lifetime and lower power consumption without compromising their 5mW optical output power. Their aspect ratio is also improved from 3.8 to 3.1.
They are suitable for use as light sources in laser levellers and measurement equipment, and ideal for medical and display applications.
Supplied in a 5.6mm package with 1N (HL6354MG) or 3P (HL6355MG) type common cathode pin configuration, the single longitudinal mode laser diodes have a typical operating current of 27mA, a low threshold current of 18mA, operating voltage of 2.2V, monitoring output current of 0.4mA, laser reverse voltage of 2V, PD reverse voltage of 30V and TM mode oscillation at a
visible wavelength of 635nm. The operating temperature range is 0 degrees Centigrade to +50 degrees Centigrade.

Powerline lasers:
StockerYale’s Lasiris™ PowerLine structured light laser is a line generator developed for demanding industrial machine vision and scientific applications. Bridging the power gap between the popular SNF and Magnum series lasers, this thermoelectrically cooled device is able to emit uniform laser lines at high powers, up to 1 W at 810 nm and 500 mW at 670 nm.
With exceptional beam pointing and focusing stabilities, the PowerLine laser can be operated in extreme environments ranging from -20°C to +55°C. The laser beam can be modulated by an external signal through a DB-9 connector on the back panel and all models can operate in either CW or external modulation mode. The laser is protected against over-voltage, reverse polarity of the power supply, over-temperature, and ESD.

High Visibility 638nm Laser Diode offers 40mW with better Beam Circularity
Photonic Products, the UK optoelectronics device manufacturer and laser diode specialist, is delighted to announce the launch of a new high visibility, short wavelength laser diode from Sanyo, rated to 50 degrees Centigrade, which offers a very high optical output power of 40mW CW with a low threshold current of 60mA in a 9mm package.
The DL-LS1158 638nm laser diode is part of a new range of laser diodes being developed by Sanyo with a new diode type structure which results in a greatly improved beam circularity ratio of 2:1, compared to the previous beam circularity ratio of 4:1.
The improved beam circularity results in greater efficiency and consequently significant cost savings for OEMs and, combined with the high optical output power and high visibility, makes it an ideal laser diode for use as a light source in laser displays, laser levellers and line-markers, bar-code scanners, machine vision and medical and dental imaging applications.

Impressive though the success story of semiconductor lasers has been, there are still several spectral "gaps", wavelengths that cannot be directly accessed with laser diodes. However, nonlinear frequency conversion techniques can be employed to generate tunable laser radiation in the UV, blue and green spectral range. TOPTICA offers state-of-the-art laser systems based on second harmonic generation (SHG), sum frequency generation (SFG) and fourth harmonic generation (FHG).

Distributed feedback (DFB) and distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser diodes will greatly ease the life of many scientists. These diodes feature a grating structure within the semiconductor material in order to narrow the emission linewidth. Our DFB and DBR diodes operate in both transverse and longitudinal single mode. Tuning is achieved by modulating either laser current or operating temperature. Single frequency operation is maintained over several hundreds of GHz without mode hops. For maximum frequency stability, we recommend TOPTICA Photonics' patented ColdPack housing. Here, four thermoelectric elements serve to stabilize the laser temperature, or alternatively rapidly heat or cool the diode as appropriate for your particular application.
- 760 - 3000 nm
- Narrow line width (< 5 MHz)
- Frequency tuning via temperature (typ. 25 GHz/K)
- Rapid frequency modulation via current (typ. 1 - 2 GHz/mA)

Tapered amplifier (TA) diodes combine the "best of both worlds": Laser diodes designed for single mode operation as powerful as broad area emitters for highest output power. Usually, the power of a single mode diode is limited by Catastrophic Optical Mirror Damage (COMD) whilst the higher power of a broad area emitter has the drawback of multiple transverse mode operation. Using a special lateral geometry, where a single mode channel ensures operation at the fundamental transverse mode, while the power density on the output facet is greatly reduced by diffraction of the beam within a subsequent tapered gain section.
- 658 - 1083 nm
- Exceptionally high brightness semiconductor lasers
- Up to 1 W output power
- Nearly diffraction limited beam
- Designed for Master Oscillator Power Amplifier (MOPA) configuration
