A light meter is an instrument used to obtain an objective measure of luminous flux per unit area on a specific surface. The unit of measurement is the lux.
Light meters are used by cinematographers and photographers, as well as by lighting and energy experts seeking to optimize lighting systems.
Modern light meters convert luminous flux striking a photo sensor into an electrical signal. The signal is interpreted and the result displayed either by a needle moving along a scale (analog) or on an LCD screen (digital). There are pocket models, as well as those including a recording feature.
Choice will be made as a function of the meter's effective range and the intensity of light to be measured.
