Limit switches are electromechanical devices used for positioning and control applications in mechanical and systems engineering. They are used to detect presence or absence in areas where physical contact is allowed.
Limit switches can be seen in applications such as in valves where the extension of the valve shaft mechanically trips the limit switch, indicating an open or closed position. Limit switches are also found in applications such as woodworking, plastic injection and packaging in order to monitor the position of moving components.
Limit switches include several different styles of the actuator/operating head. The actuator is the part of the limit switch which comes into contact with the moving object. Actuator/operating heads can be found as pin plungers, levers, roller plungers, roller levers, flexible rods and other configurations.
Certain environment-resistant specifications should be taken into consideration when ordering limit switches. There are several features on limit switches that can make them more suitable for certain environmental conditions such as dust, water, dirt, oil and temperature. This is to aid operation and maintenance, and various wiring specifications.
