The encoders come in digital or analogue output variants and offer a range of customer selectable resolutions 1 µm, 2 µm, 5 µm, 10 µm, 20 µm and 50 µm. At 1 µm the LM10 offers a maximum velocity of 4 m/s.
Engineered for extreme service, the solid-state LM10 linear encoders operate from -20 °C to +85 °C, have water-proof sealing to IP68, and are highly resistant to shock, vibrations and pressure. The robust magnetic scale is also resistant to a range of chemicals commonly found in industry. The non-contact, frictionless design eliminates wear while reducing hysteresis for high precision at high speeds and acceleration.
LM10 encoders bring reliable solutions to tough, hard-working applications including woodworking, stone-cutting, sawing, metalworking, textiles, packaging, plastics processing, automation and assembly systems, water-jet cutting, and electronic chip/board production.

Linear encoders
Sealed linear encoders are protected from dust, chips and splash fluids and are ideal for operation on machine tools.
Exposed linear encoders operate with no mechanical contact between the scanning head and the scale or scale tape. Typical areas of application for these encoders include measuring machines, comparators and other precision devices in linear metrology, as well as production and measuring equipment, for example in the semiconductor industry.
With incremental linear encoders, the current position is determined by starting at a datum and counting measuring steps, or by subdividing and counting signal periods. Incremental encoders from HEIDENHAIN feature reference marks, which must be scanned after switch-on to reestablish the datum. This process is especially simple and fast with distance-coded reference marks.
Absolute linear encoders require no previous traverse to provide the current position value. The encoder transmits the absolute value through the EnDat interface or another serial interface.
Length gauges
Length gauges from HEIDENHAIN feature integral guideways for the plunger. They are used to monitor measuring equipment, in industrial metrology, and also as position encoders.

The linear encoder is used to convert linear displacements of machine key components into electrical signals containing information about the value and direction of the displacement. Common applications include coordinate and precision machine tools, coordinate measuring machines, microscopes and other high precision equipment.
The system consists of an exposed scale and an encoder read head that works on the transmitted light principle. The scanning portion of the head self-aligns with the scale and thus maintains a constant gap between scanning unit and scale. The glass scale has a grating with two line tracks. One track is the periodic graduation with a constant line pitch of 20 µm. The second contains a reference mark, which can be located 40 mm from either end, from both ends, or in the middle of the measurement range. Unique location of reference marks can also be supplied upon request.

Absolute Linear Encoders, RF25X Series
Application domain
Absolute encoders are designed for measuring and checking of displacements, dimensions, runouts, surface profiles and deformations of technological objects.
Operating principle
Operation of the sensors is based on the principle of photoelectric scanning of special scale, connected with a measurement tip of the sensor. Radiation of a LED is collimated by a lens and is directed on a scale. The image of area of the scale is examined by CMOS array and is analyzed by signal processor which calculates position of the scale.
