LASERSCALE™
High accuracy linear and rotary scales
High-speed response, superior accuracy, and high environmental resistance is featured in the LASERSCALE™, an exposed encoder from Sony. Because there is no contact between the scanning head and the scale, mechanical backlash (hysteresis) is eliminated. LASERSCALE™ measures displacement by monitoring the phase change of a semiconductor laser beam as it passes through a hologram grating.

The sealed linear encoder is used to convert linear displacements of machine key components into electrical signals containing information about the value and direction of the displacement.
The encoder consists of a glass grating scale installed into a rigid hollow housing and a ball-bearing-guided reading head. To be able to work in harsh environments such as lubricants and chips, the encoder has sealing lips. Filtered air can be supplied into the housing of the encoder for extra protection.

Sealed linear encoders are protected from dust, chips and splash fluids and are ideal for operation on machine tools. An aluminium housing and elastic sealing lips protect the magnetic tape, scanning carriage and guideway from chips, swarf, dirt and splashwater. The scanning carriage travels in a low-friction guide within the scale unit. It is connected to the external mounting block by a coupling that compensates unavoidable misalignment between the scale and the machine guideways.

The Model 9717 is a high-resolution incremental encoder
that offers direct measurement of linear position or speed
without contact between the reading head and the glass scale.
When used with the optional HR2B or HR2C interpolator,
its optical resolution can be electronically increased and the output provided as quadrature square waves plus index from RS422 differential line drivers.
