Linear encoders
Sealed linear encoders are protected from dust, chips and splash fluids and are ideal for operation on machine tools.
Exposed linear encoders operate with no mechanical contact between the scanning head and the scale or scale tape. Typical areas of application for these encoders include measuring machines, comparators and other precision devices in linear metrology, as well as production and measuring equipment, for example in the semiconductor industry.
With incremental linear encoders, the current position is determined by starting at a datum and counting measuring steps, or by subdividing and counting signal periods. Incremental encoders from HEIDENHAIN feature reference marks, which must be scanned after switch-on to reestablish the datum. This process is especially simple and fast with distance-coded reference marks.
Absolute linear encoders require no previous traverse to provide the current position value. The encoder transmits the absolute value through the EnDat interface or another serial interface.
Length gauges
Length gauges from HEIDENHAIN feature integral guideways for the plunger. They are used to monitor measuring equipment, in industrial metrology, and also as position encoders.

| All series of digital readouts and linear scales produced by CARMAR are designed with five bearings on the slide for superior repeatability, high slide accuracy and long service life. The scale frame is manufactured from anode treated aluminum alloy and comes with a hard chrome scale head treated for corrosion resistance. The signal wires employ a multiple layer braided net and are guarded with stainless steel shades for waterproof and anti-interference performance. The pitch of line grating is 20 microns and is fitted with ABS reference signals at the centre of the measuring length and 20 mm to each end, as standard. The response speed is 60 m/min. |
|
| Absolute linear encoders create a unique position signal that is available anywhere along travel with the exact position being read after power cycling. |
|
Our magnetostrictive linear sensors sense linear movements without contact and wear free. Linear sensors with multi magnet function can (partially) detect even up to 16 positions simultaneously.

For installation in hydraulic cylinders and hydraulic presses, tool and transfer machines, injection molding and packaging machines, storage etc.
The TR standard for magnetostrictive linear sensors is the device with pressure resistant stainless steel rod. |
|
| The enclosed models are best suited for harsh environments. The sealing lips on the extrusion keep out coolants and contamination. For applications where the Linear Encoders are used in very harsh environments, there are methods of extra protection (IP 64) beyond the enclosed unit´s standard set of sealing lips. |
|
The non-contact open measuring systems are for high displacement velocities and high accuracies, commonly used in clean environments.
Non-contact open encoders rely on the air gap between the encoder head and scale to be uniform over the measuring range. The flatness of the mounting surface and the parallelism of the machine guideway is important.
Depending on the version of the measuring system, two different measuring scales are available:
glass (partially ROBAX glassceramic) or steel . |
|
| Incremental encoders do not generate a unique signal and is zeroed after power-down. They rely on crossing an index or home signal (sometimes multiple index marks are used) prior achieving absolute position. |
