Loveland, Colorado, October 2002 — For the first time, an on-line sludge volume index measurement can provide wastewater treatment plant operators early warning of upset conditions. With Hach’s OptiQuant SVI Analyzer, operational decisions can be based on Sludge Volume results that have been determined objectively and accurately.
The analyzer gives operators a reliable, continuous analysis of Sludge Volume without frequent minimal intervention. The in-situ measurement provides accurate analysis by measuring a true representative sample directly in the aeration basin. In addition, the OptiQuant SVI Analyzer saves valuable time with on-line analysis and graphical display of the settling curve. This eliminates the need for manual plotting to determine sludge age and return activated sludge flow rate.
During a measurement cycle, the OptiQuant SVI Analyzer utilizes a sampling vessel that is submerged in the aeration basin. Liquid is purged from the vessel with air from a built-in air compressor. When the sampling vessel is full of air, a valve is opened, allowing the sludge to enter. A sampling orifice allows solids particles and flocs to remain intact within the vessel, without the aid of moving parts. The settling rate and final settled sludge volume are measured with the Infra-Cam™ device inside the sampling vessel. With the addition of an OptiQuant TS-line suspended solids probe, the analyzer calculates the Sludge Volume Index.
The OptiQuant SVI Analyzer is a convenient tool for the continuous monitoring of Sludge Volume and Sludge Volume Index in-situ, with objective, accurate results.

Extensive on-line chemical monitoring of both the water/steam cycle and the water treatment plant on modern power stations enables careful control of the water chemistry to achieve peak efficiency and minimise downtime due to excessive boiler corrosion or scaling. Sodium is one of the most important parameters to be measured on boiler plant. To aid in this, ABB provides monitoring systems for the effective and reliable measurement and control of sodium.
The 8036 uses an ion-selective electrode and reference electrode to measure the sodium ion concentration in demineralization plants and in the steam/water cycle of steam-raising plants. 8036 is an advanced monitor requiring very little maintenance and measures sodium ion concentrations within the ranges 0.01µg kg–1 to 10mg kg–1.
An integral heat exchanger equalises sample and calibration solution temperatures, reducing calibration times and increasing accuracy. On initiating calibration, the monitor automatically introduces calibration solution, makes adjustments and returns the monitor to sample mode; no further action is required. The auto-ranging facility provides outstanding discrimination yet gives wide application coverage, e.g. 0.5 µg kg–1 operation, 10 µg kg–1 alarm, 300 µg kg–1 shut-down. Contacts provide a remote indication of the range.

The TN, or Total Nitrogen, Analyzer is an additional analysis tool available from BioTector Analytical Systems. When the BioTector oxidizes organic carbon compounds (for TOC measurement) it also oxidizes bound (organic and inorganic) nitrogen compounds and ammonium compounds into nitrate (NO3-). This nitrate is present as an aqueous ion in the oxidized sample fluid in the BioTector reactor.
When TOC analysis is complete, the sample fluid is brought from the reactor into a measuring cell. Here the spectrophotometer analyzes the wavelengths applicable to nitrates. The result is displayed as Total Nitrogen (TN). A cleaning fluid is then passed through the measuring cell automatically, which ensures that operator cleaning and maintenance is kept to an absolute minimum.

ATI has developed a completely new approach to on-line monitoring of ammonia that is far less expensive and much simpler than conventional monitoring equipment. The Q45N Dissolved Ammonia Monitor uses reaction chemistry that converts ammonia in solution to a stable monochloramine compound equivalent in concentration to the original ammonia level. The chloramine concentration is then measured with a unique amperometric sensor that responds linearly to chloramines while eliminating interference from excess free chlorine in solution.
Q45N monitors are available in two versions, one that includes all components conveniently integrated into a Nema 4X fiberglas enclosure, and a second that separates the monitor from the chemistry system for applications where a more convenient display location is desired. ATI’s Q45N monitoring package for dissolved ammonia provides the measurement stability needed to avoid complicated automatic calibration systems.
