Lithium battery technology is evolving constantly. Lithium is the strongest of metallic reducing agents and is very light. It is a promising material for producing batteries of high specific energy (by weight) and high energy density (by volume).
ApplicationsThese batteries are widely used in portable electronic devices, and are increasingly found in the areas of security and backup systems, as well as in the military, aerospace and medicine. They are already employed in electric bicycles and hybrid autos, but safety and energy density problems make them unsuitable for all-electric vehicles.
TechnologiesThe lithium-ion storage cell is the most common type. Lithium metal cells have serious safety problems. Polymer versions also exist. Protective systems are included to reduce inherent dangers. In Li-ion batteries, the lithium is in an ionic state; its function is not based on an electrochemical couple. The various models have different types of electrodes, the object of extensive research.
There is no memory effect and self-discharge is limited, but charge and discharge current capacity is limited. Most such batteries last only a few years, though certain high-power industrial models are designed to last up to 15 years.
Choice will depend on nominal voltage and storage capacity in ampere-hours (Ah).
