A loader is characterized by its large, front-mounted bucket capable of picking up loose material scattered or piled on the ground. It is able to dig, but only to shallow depth, unlike a hydraulic shovel.
Loaders are used primarily for scooping up loose material (earth, gravel, ore, etc.) and moving it to another location or loading it onto trucks, conveyors, etc.
Wheeled, articulated loaders are the most common. There is a wide range of size and engine power, from miniloaders to giant models used in mining. The smallest models are extremely compact and light, and are suitable for small jobs. The special drive arrangement on skid-steer loaders offers power and nimbleness. It has great versatility thanks to the numerous tools that can be mounted in place of the bucket. Tracked loaders, developed from caterpillar tractors, have better traction but are slower.
