A membrane switch generally consists of two polyester films that are screen printed with conductive ink to form the circuit layers of the switch. A spacer, which is die cut at contact points, is then sandwiched between two circuits. The die-cut holes permit a touch of the finger to close the contact, which in turn completes the circuit. Upon release, the circuit is broken.
A graphic overlay is added to the membrane switch to allow the input device user to identify specific switch contacts.
The panel back is laminated with an adhesive for mounting to a backer or enclosure and is terminated with a means for interfacing with the customer’s electronics.
Tactile feedback in a membrane switch is actually an enhancement, which provides the user feedback when they press the key location. Typically, the switch consists of a top and bottom layer of polyester with a tactile actuator that when pressed, momentarily completes the circuit while providing the user a degree of response based on the switches construction.
Non-tactile membrane switches rely on a sensory response other then tactile touch, such as an audio or visual stimuli that alerts the user to switch closure.
Non-tactile switches perform well in abusive environments and are more conducive in applications where large, hidden or irregular shaped keys are a requirement.
Printed circuit board switches are utilized in situations where there are trace routing limitations with traditional membrane switches or the OEM customer would like to utilize the PCB as a ridged backer that can also be populated with active and passive components, reducing the amount of materials and interconnects.

The standard line of polyester keyboards features all the experience and know-how of GRAFOS. The efficiency of this kind of products, meeting the needs of having a complete and ready to use product, is guaranteed under hard demand. They are available in several models - 33 to 104 keys version- and are used above all for applications of Industrial Automation. There are different models for different applications: from frame to panel version, from desktop to drawer version and finally rack version. Membrane keyboards promise a pleasant palpation feeling with tactile feedback, security and precision during the data input, also by the use with gloves; the polyester front plate is resistant against numerous chemical active substances. In the side photo an example of 87 keys frame version of reduced dimensions and, as pointing option, a plastic trackball.

The Trio membrane keypad is a single unit which brings together all the elements required for an effective man machine interface in one package. This minimises the time taken to mount and connect to other Trio Motion technology control system products.
The unit consists of an IP65 keypad featuring 37 tactile keys, eight of which can be defined by the user and identified by inserting key legends from the rear of the keypad. Incorporated into the units is a four line by twenty character, vacuum fluorescent display. Connection to the control system is via a fibre-optic cable to the Master Controller. The interfacing is handled by dedicated built-in network interface software. The only other connection necessary is for the power supply.

User-friendly, flexible membrane switch keyboards that are long-lasting (>6 million actuations), reliable and cost-effective.
The Clicktouch process produces a thermoformed polyester foil with “elastic” spring zones enabling extended key travel. Circuit layers are printed on polyester substrates with special silver, carbon and insulation links, with additional protection against oxidation provided by over-printing with carbon.
Advantages over conventional membrane and metal dome based keyboards:
•Significantly reduced contact bounce (<2 ms)
•Long key travel (up to 2 mm) providing improved tactile feedback (even when operated by someone wearing gloves, a clear click can be sensed)
•No metal parts, resulting in a longer switch life and greater reliability.
Clicktouch retains essentially the same ergonomic performance as standard mechanical push buttons, but is also:
•Dust-tight
•Water-tight
•Chemically resistant

A membrane switch, or membrane keyboard, is most often described as a thin, low profile, micro motion front panel assembly utilizing one or more layers of polyester, with screen printed conductors printed on each layer. The switch assembly is generally built with pressure sensitive adhesives to bond the polyester layers together.
When two or more circuit layers are designed into the switch panel, the adhesive spacers both separate and attach the conductive layers. Additionally, they provide the openings needed to allow for a switch closure between the two separated layers. Other options that are often provided on the front panel include an adhesive mounting sheet to attach the keypad to a housing or sheet metal bracket, and a graphic overlay. The graphic is used to provide the cosmetic appeal that is most often associated with a membrane switch assembly.
Tactile membrane switches are either stamped and plated metal contacts, or embossed polyester contacts, used in conjunction with a front panel assembly. The tactile element is generally part of the switch system: enclosed in the switch assembly to provide a "snap" or tactile response when the switch is actuated.

Lumitex uses sheets of UniGlo Fiber Optic Cloth cut into specific sizes and shapes to create a thin flexible lighting layer that goes between the overlay and the dome switches. The product is typically 0.013" (0.33mm) thick and anywhere from 1 sq inch to over 100 sq inches.
The optical fibers coming off one end of the panel are bundled into a circular ferrule and coupled to one or more LED light sources.
Lumitex Fiber Optic Membrane Switch backlighting provides long life, low power, inert, maintenance free backlighting for all membrane switch, overlay, label, keypad and keyboard designs.
Longer Life - Durable fiber optic panel never needs replacement. Remote light source offers 20,000 to 100,000 hours life and easy replacement.
Lower Power - Sources require less power than EL, or LED Array and no inverter. As low as 5-20mA at 2-4vdc
Compact Size - Panels are thin and sources are smaller than EL inverters.
