Modbus is an open communication protocol widely used in industrial networks.
The Modbus protocol is used to network programmable automated industrial devices, control and measurement modules. It has become the de facto communications standard in industry.
The Modbus data transmission protocol works via a dialog between a master station and as many as 247 slave units. Exchanges can proceed via asynchronous multi-point liaison (types RS-232, RS-422, RS-485) or by current loop using a differential pair. Output can reach 10 Mbits/second over more than a kilometer.
The master sends a request specifying the slave address and receives a response from that station (in haldfduplex). It can also simply send data without need for a response. The data frame contains the address of the slave device, the operation to be executed (e.g., writing, reading, diagnosis), the data and a 16-bit or CRC16 error verification code. Module addresses are inserted by coding wheel or keyboard.
The Modbus can link to the Ethernet using different gateways or by wireless ZigBee®. TCP/IP versions use Ethernet links. Modbus Plus is a multi-master token network at one Mbit per second.
