An optical refractometer is a portable instrument for measuring the refraction of a solution. This indicates the concentration of one component of the solution via a scale adapted to the sample to be analyzed.
Optical refractometers are used in numerous industries, with different models designed for many different food, pharmaceutical or cosmetic products. They also are commonly used to test the sugar content of wine grapes, fresh fruit, juices, etc. Other uses include testing industrial fluids, such as glycol, battery acid, engine coolant, etc.
All optical refractometers operate on the same principle. The user places a few drops of sample between the prism and the transparent movable cover slip and looks through the instrument while pointing it toward a source of natural light. The concentration is read directly against a graduated scale. Many refractometers have zero and temperature adjustments.
Choice will depend on intended use, since the sample type will determine the scale characteristics. Thus, manufacturers make instruments for each type of analysis: fruit juices, honey, soup, glycol, coolant, etc.
