Position switches are used wherever moving parts on machinery and plants need to be positioned, controlled and monitored.
The design details in relation to body dimensions, materials, electrical loading capacity, rated values and quality characteristics are to a great extent determined by the variety of application, from precision mechanics to heavy engineering.
Many of the position switches fulfill the requirements of the IEC 60947-5-1 product standard and can therefore also be used as position switches with safety function.
The position switches are available with snap action or slow action.
A wide variety of actuator specifications heads are available. The majority of units are also obtainable with metal rollers.
The position switches are shown in the sequence of body sizes, starting with the smallest design.

Position Sensing Solutions
Bimba offers pre-tested Position Sensing Solutions for Bimba actuators suppliers. Our solutions provide a cost effective interface between the industrial pneumatic actuators and electrical control systems. Our pre-tested solutions also eliminate costly, time-consuming design and fabrication required if switches are purchased separately and provide an aesthetically pleasing installation.
Both traditional Bimba switches as well as newer generations of Bimba switches are offered to allow for maximum flexibility to fit your application.
The switches perform the same functions as conventional limit switches suppliers. They can be used as position indicators, cycle counters, or to confirm operation.
All Bimba switches are designed to sense a magnet that is incorporated into the piston of the cylinder. Magnets are standard in Bimba MRS cylinders, but must be purchased as an option on other Bimba actuators.
A variety of outputs are offered for each switch family including PNP (transistor sourcing), NPN (transistor sinking), normally open contacts, and higher power triac. |

Capacitive Metrology Sensors Introduction
PI capacitive (capacitance) sensors are the metrology system of choice for the most demanding nanopositioning applications. They are absolute-measuring, high-dynamics devices. PI capacitive transducers / control electronics use a high-frequency AC excitation signal for enhanced bandwidth and drift-free measurement stability (subnanometer stability over several hours, see Fig. 6, on Link).
They enable direct measurement of the moving platform and are especially well-suited for multi-axis measurements in parallel metrology configurations. Parallel metrology means that the controller monitors all controlled degrees of freedom relative to "ground", a prerequisite for active trajectory control.
Capacitive sensors also offer the highest linearity (accuracy).

Hall-Effect Position sensor W/ Linear Output Voltage (HL)
Non- contact magnetic sensors that are designed to respond to a wide range of positive or negative magnetic fields and can sense relatively small changes in a magnetic field. By having magnet as a target, this unit produces a Ratio-metric Rail-To-Rail linear output. It also has an internal amplifier to boost the output to a higher level. These sensors are ideal for applications such as magnetic flux measurement, displacement, and linear output rotary measurement.

In industrial processes where liquids, air or gases are used valves serve for dosing and control. There is a wide variety of valve types, butterfly or ball valves manufacturer being the most common quarter-turn types.
In large plants these valves are seldom operated manually. Mechanical actuation is normally done by separate actuators manufacturers. The valve position must be monitored electronically. This is necessary to give feedback to the controller when a certain position (e.g. "open" or "closed") is reached and to monitor the valves centrally from a control room.
Mechanical switches are still often used for position feedback on the actuator industrial shaft. For other solutions several proximity detectors are used together with a switching target for position detection. Disadvantage of these solutions: Mounting is mechanically complex. During switch mounting the signal wires can be reversed when they are connected in the top-mounted junction case. Where there are temperature fluctuations condensing humidity leads to corrosion and thus malfunction. |

The new SMAT continuously detects the position of the cylinder piston within a range of 50 mm. It has an analogue output with an output signal in proportion to the piston position. The integrated OOR (out-of-range) sensor indicates if the piston is outside the sensing range. The connection for evaluating the 0 … 10 V and/or the 4 … 20 mA signal is made directly to analogue inputs.
Typical areas of application in object detection are as follows:
Press-fitting, clamping, position sensing, workpiece replacement
In process monitoring:
Sheet metal handling/production, wear monitoring, quality inspection
- The installation direction of the SMAT in the slot can be chosen freely.
- Contactless measuring principle = wear-free sensing.
- Measuring range is always 50 mm, regardless of cylinder; reproducibility 0.1 mm.

Hall Effect Devices detect magnetic flux density (mainly produced by a permanent magnetic) and are used in both movement and position sensing. By integrating the sensing element onto the same silicon as its control logic and interface circuitry, Melexis has produced sensor chips with various degrees of intelligence to suit most applications. Sensing the rotation of shafts (e.g. cam- and crank-shaft) in engine, monitoring movement in motors and actuators suppliers, sensing pedal, throttle and steering wheel position, Melexis Hall Devices offer a reliable, contactless method of movement and position detection.
Melexis is a technological leader for the design, development and testing of integrated Hall Effect Devices. Melexis Hall Effect Devices enable an optimal use of the smaller feature sizes of which semiconductor technology is capable today. Therefore, very sophisticated mixed analog-digital signal conditioning circuitry (such as Chopped Analog String, Digital Signal Processing Core, Microcontroller) can be integrated. Most of the devices can withstand the severe automotive conditions despite few external components.

The RACO path-sensory system has been specially designed for exactly positioning and switching off electro-magnetic actuators manufacturers in the final position. Not only is the position ascertained unconventionally by electro-magnetic means (e.g., gear-shifting mechanism) while doing so but it will also be determined via a close-coupled magnetic field without any movement.
The EPS consists of a printed circuit board and a magnetic holder with the magnet. The electronic positioning sensor (EPS) is integrated into the device%u2019s supplementary casing (A) on the motor shaft's end of the servo-motor or in the device's supplementary box (D) on the coupling casing. The installation, commissioning (starting up), maintenance (servicing) and upgrading is simplified in comparison with a conventional design that has mechanical limit switches suppliers and a shift transmission which must be adjusted individually.
