PROFIBUS is an open standard for field networks. open norm. Its copper cables constitute a single pair of conductors. This standard differentiates communicating devices from simple activation systems and sensors.
The PROFIBUS system is used as a field bus both for automation and industrial regulation.
The link cable features a pair of RS485 or CEI 1158-2 copper conductors for explosive environments, and conveys both power and serial data. For high speed and significant protection from interference over long distances, the use of fiber optics is recommended.
Inter-master communication (PA) uses the token method in a ring topology. The masters freely emit data and share access to the bus at speeds up to 12 Mbits/s. In master-slave mode (DP), the master unit sends messages to activators and sensors that carry out the received orders or transmit required data. Speeds reach 31 Kbits/s.
This standard enables the creation of multi-master architecture. The slave units are organized in segments on PROFIBUS DP, linked to a master PROFIBUS PA via couplers and gateways. Distributors, splitters and repeaters also contribute to the network's structure. Gateways for PROFINET and Ethernet TCP/IP also exist.
Numerous elements are needed to build such a network. Distances, environment, integrated automation or measuring modules and the requirements for supervisory devices will determine the parts to be acquired.
