Protective gloves are an item of individual safety gear designed to protect the hands against thermal, chemical and mechanical hazards, such as abrasion, burns, cuts, crushing, irritation, etc.
Numerous uses for protective gloves are found in industry, research, medicine and other domains.
Protection is derived from the gloves' composition (latex, PVC, neoprene, etc.) and surface qualities (smooth, non-slip, etc.).
Choice of protective glove will depend on the degree of resistance desired, as a function of intended use (products to be handled). Gloves should resist:
- degradation (swelling, cracking, hardening, etc.) upon contact with a product
- penetration of a product through surface imperfections
- permeation of a product throughout the glove
The wearer's comfort and applicable norms should also be considered.
