Ultrasonic sensors present the ideal solution for non-contact position and distance measurement in all industrial areas where environmental conditions such as dust, smoke or steam may effect the sensors. Objects consisting of a variety of materials can be detected regardless of colour or shape to within millimetres.
The sensor uses very high frequencies that are outside of the human’s audible range, as a data carrier. The time it takes the ultrasonic wave to pass between the sensor and the object is the value for the distance or the position. Ultrasonic sensors have proven their reliability and precision especially in the wood and furniture industry, the construction materials industry, farming equipment, construction equipment and in level control applications.
Pepperl+Fuchs’ ultrasonic sensors currently encompass 8 series of mechanical designs for through-beam, direct detection and reflex operation with more than 40 designs and models. Customer and application specific custom solutions underscore our technological competence in this area of sensors.

Sonar Proximity Switches SIMATIC PXS
From 2,5 cm to 10 m - They Hear Everything!
Our sonar proximity switches sense objects of varying materials, shapes, colors or consistencies with absolute precision, flexibility and reliability. The application potential is almost unlimited. Whether recording fill levels or heights, measuring distances or counting bottles, our switches recognize objects with a wide range of properties from a distance of 2,5 cm to 10 m, regardless whether they are liquid, solid, powdery or even transparent. Surface conditions are irrelevant as well - they can be rough or smooth, clean or dirty, wet or dry. Our proximity switches feature maximum ruggedness and resistance against dirt, vibration and extraneous light or sound.

Ultrasonic distance sensors are working contactless and can still detect small objects (e.g. wire Æ 1 mm) at considerable distances. They are able to disregard disturbing backgrounds and functions in fog, dust , dirt or extreme lighting is possible. No correction factors have to be applied and colour does not matter.

Honeywell Sensing and Control ultrasonic distance sensors solve tough position sensing problems, detecting targets made of practically any material. They work in dry, dusty environments. Particularly useful where other sensing technologies have difficulty, such as: clear or shiny objects, foggy or particle laden air, splashing liquids, etc. Also where larger sensors or longer sensing distances are required.

Ultrasonic sensors use ultrasonic waves for non-contact and wear-free detection of a large variety of objects. It does not matter whether the object is transparent or opaque, metallic or non-metallic, or of liquid, solid or powdery consistence. Environmental conditions such as spray, dust or rain hardly affect their function.

The RPS-401A-80P analog ultrasonic sensor is mounted in a PVC barrel housing and is completely self contained. It is powered by 20-30 VDC and is reverse polarity protected. It also has a narrow beam angle which enables it to get into tight places. A flat target can tilt up to 10 degrees and still be detected. The RPS-401A-80P has 2 short circuit protected analog outputs, 4-20mA and 0-10 VDC. These outputs can easily be inverted and can be scaled over almost any range by means of adjusting the zero (P1) and span control (P2). The (P1) potentiometer must be adjusted first. Both analog outputs can be used at the same time.
For set-up purposes an LED strength indicator is provided. This LED is Green when not detecting and changes to a bright Red as a target moves into place depending on how much reflected signal is coming back from the target. The frequency of operation for the RPS-401A-80P is 140kHz. The RPS-401A-80P is constructed of PVC. The barrel measures 30mm x 105mm. A standard 6' cable is provided.

When short-range sensing applications demand repeatable and reliable On/Off control performance, the high-frequency, fixed-window SUPERPROX® Model SM600 Series ultrasonic proximity sensors are the ideal solution. These noncontact, self-contained sensors are unmatched for the reliable detection of objects of all kinds, transparent or opaque, liquid or solid, and as small as 1.6 mm (0.06") rod diameter, regardless of color or shape. Offering a variety of sensing ranges, up to 305 mm (12"), and fixed sensing windows, this series provides for the convenient placement of SM600 sensors throughout the plant.
Given the capability to “back off” from formerly “nearly-touching” mounting positions, these sensors are the solution for such applications as: metal parts as close as 25 mm (1"), moving back-to-back at speeds in excess of 2000 per minute. Others include: cap presence and/or tilt detection, fill-level checking, fill-tube-presence monitoring, downed container detection, case inspection, detection of container edges, web monitoring and CD case inspection where opacity, color and height vary, and wherever there’s a need to upgrade a metal prox function.

The RPS-400-6 is a compact, high frequency sensor. It was introduced to the Migatron family of ultrasonic sensors to better meet the needs of the machine manufacturing industry.
This sensor has a wide array of application solutions not found in other proximity sensor technologies. The RPS-400-6 has an adjustable two to six inch sensing range with background suppression (meaning any object within the desired range is detected, while objects out of the desired range are ignored).
It cannot be affected by changes in target color or material. The RPS-400-6 is capable of detecting vibrating and/or tilting targets. A response time of no more than 2.1 ms and an operating frequency of 300 kHz makes the RPS-400-6 a repeatable and accurate high speed sensor.
The RPS-400-6 is a three wire NPN transistor output device. The transistor can switch 30VDC at 50 mA continuously. A six-foot cable comes standard with the RPS-400-6. Special cable lengths or connectors are also available for OEM applications.

The sensor has a built in temperature compensation target, that monitors and compensates for air temperature 50 times per second. The sensor also compensates for changes in relative humidity, changes in barometric pressure, and other factors that influence the speed of sound.
The RPS-412A has a 47mm stainless steel barrel housing. The stainless steel housing is electrically isolated from the sensor electronics.
The RPS-412A has a 0-10V analog output. Two measuring ranges are available: 3-10" and 3-16".

Sensors are elementary components of automation. Increasingly precise and wear-free sensors with more and more reliable measurements enable a continuous improvement of the production process. Here, no-touch sensors working with an almost unlimited lifetime are playing a major role. In distance measuring, different measuring methods depending on the measuring range have established themselves. For the medium range between a few centimetres and several metres optical and ultrasonic systems are mainly used. Ultrasonic distance sensors are used in harsh, industrial environments, because they are independent of the material and the colour of the object to be measured, they cannot be disturbed by light, dust and fog, and they work very precisely and linearly with background suppression.
ELTROTEC Sensor GmbH ultrasonics has more than 20 years of experience in addition to the higher-end laser distance sensors with more accuracy, speed and precision. Trust our products for your application in:

The RPS-322 (model shown) has 2 sealed stainless steel multiplexed transducers, independent range control adjustments, LED indicators, and form C relay outputs.
The transducer head is constructed of 303 grade stainless steel with a 302 grade stainless steel sensing face, and is best suited for environments where dirt and moisture are a problem, as well as some chemical environments. This sensor also has a unique master and slave feature which enables many of the same units to be used within close proximity of one another without cross-talk interference. For example, if three sensors are needed in a close area, one sensor would be left as a master and the other two would be slaves.
The remote transducers allow for mounting of the sensor heads in cramped spaces while the controller is out of the way. The (2) independent and isolated form C relays furnish N.O. and N.C. outputs. This sensor operates at a frequency of 150kHz for the 72" range. This sensor has a narrow sensing beam. Mounting flanges, LED indicators, ranging potentiometers, and 6-ft. transducer cables are included. Optional cable lengths are available.
