Refractometers

Need help
choosing?

A refractometer is an instrument designed to measure the refractive index of a sample. The result is read on an appropriate scale, yielding the solution's concentration. It is commonly used in the food and wine industries (sugar content), as well as to measure industrial and petrochemical fluids.

Technologies

A portable refractometer enables field measurements using natural light. It is simple to use, the result being read directly on a visual scale. Digital portable instruments replace the human eye with a photodiode matrix and display the result on a screen. This reduces judgment errors. Bench-top digital refractometers use the same principle in laboratory settings and are more precise. The Abbe type, the first modern refractometer, is still used. It has undergone few changes, though the results are now sometimes displayed on a digital screen.

How to choose

Choice will depend on field or laboratory use and, especially, on the type of measurements to be made. Different models are designed for use with different liquids. Manufacturers offer a wide range of models suitable for different applications.
