The Abbe Refractometer derives its name from the 19th Century physicist Ernst Abbe (1840-1905). Abbe designed an instrument for measuring the dispersion of light and this became the precursor for the so-called ‘Abbe Refractometer’.
Bellingham Stanley offer a number of Abbe refractometers and a choice can be made in accordance with the measurement requirement and budget availability.
Launched in 2006, the Abbe 5 offers direct refractive index and Brix readings at a low price and is ideal for academia as well as for general measurement within industry.
Abbe 60 refractometers are manufactured to extremely high standards and come in a variety of scale ranges to suit particular application requirements including regular single wavelength refractive index and high accuracy dispserion measurements.

This is a precision instrument for determining the solid contens dissolved in liquids, such as sugar, salt, or serum protein in blood and starch. A few drops of the sample is palced on the refractometer prism and the index of the refraction is measured. From this, dissolved solids can be determined in seconds.

The PR21-series has been developed for direct insertion into pipes and boilers. It measures the refractive index with high accuracy and enables sophisticated process monitoring in the food, sugar, beverage, chemical, textile, paper, metalworking and petrochemical industries. Measurements are not influenced by color or turbidity. The instrument is also ideal for waste-water control and a number of other quality inspections.
Installation of the process refractometer is simple and fast due to the use of standardized flanges. It can be connected to a PLC by analog interface or PROFIBUS (available optionally).
In addition to its up-market PR21 Process Refractometer A.KRÜSS has launched the PRB21 bypass process refractometer to meet all requirements in basic process monitoring.

PIOX® R is FLEXIM's new process refractometer sensor. Thanks to a unique tranmitted light measurement (more), it reaches a high precision, is thermically driftfree and zero point stable. An integrated Pt1000 probe cares for a rapid temperature compensation.
Standard refractometer applications such as the calculation of the sugar concentration in °Brix are included in the standard delivery. Customer specific fluid data can be implemented with the help of the software tool RMKoeff (more). Afterward, PIOX will determine the customer specific output quantites such as for exemple the mass concentration of a component of a solution. When further process parameters are input, the measurement of 3-component mixtures is also possible.
The refractometer offers various useful tools for rapid error detection, amongst others a self-diagnosis function and a detection of coating formation on the prism.
PIOX® R400 can be used in the most diverse applications. Various designs, materials and process connections guarantee optimum process integration. To meet the special requirements of the chemical industry, versions for use in explosive atmospheres from ATEX zone 2 to ATEX zone 0 are available.

Optilab® rEX Refractive Index Detector
2005 R&D 100 Award Winner!
The Optilab® rEX (refractometer with EXtended range) is an Refractive Index detector with 256 times the detection power and up to 50 times the dynamic range of every RI detector in existence today. Using a combination of cutting-edge semiconductor photodiode technology and proprietary computer algorithms, the rEX presents a host of instrument firsts.
For example, there are no range or gain settings. The full range of instrument detection is always present, and the full sensitivity exists over the entire range.
The rEX also has a flow cell with a total volume of only 7.4 uL -- 25% less than the leading refractometers available today. This translates into minimized band broadening and better temperature stability.
The Optilab® rEX can also do something no other on-line Refractive Index detector can: it can measure the absolute refractive index of a solution. In addition, it can measure the dn/dc of a solvent at the same wavelength of light as the light scattering instrument. And just to make sure it can't be matched, you can replace the light source in the rEX for other wavelengths (e.g. 690, 633, 488, etc.)!
The new Optilab® rEX shares the ability its predecessor (the Optilab® DSP) to go to below ambient temperatures as easily as above ambient. No hassle temperature control can be programmed down to 4°C or as high as 50°C. Compatible with all HPLC systems.
