The retractable bollard is used as an obstacle to prevent vehicular access to a designated area while allowing access to pedestrians, motorcycles and bicycles.
Retractable bollards offer varying levels of security. Traditional models control vehicular traffic in city centers and walking streets or limit access to parking lots, shopping centers, etc. High-security versions are designed to resist vehicular ramming to prevent access to protected areas, such as government buildings, military installations, embassies, airports, etc.
Retractable bollards use different mechanisms and control systems. Manual models require the user to manually raise and lower the bollard. Mechanical versions have a system which compensates for the weight of the bollard. Power bollards include an electric, hydraulic or pneumatic mechanism and a remote control system.
The primary element of choice is the required level of security. Crash test results determine the resistance of the bollard. The most common certifications are DOS K4/8/12 and PAS 68. Operating mode (manual, mechanical, semi-automatic, automatic) and power source also must be considered. In certain environments, the bollard's aesthetic qualities may also be a criterion.
