Traditional sources of energy such as oil, coal and gas are limited and pollute the environment. Why then not turn to an energy source which will last a lot longer: the prospects for solar energy have never been better.
As the world leader in germanium, a very rare material, Umicore has been active in this sector for quite some time: our extremely thin and pure germanium substrates (or wafers) are very popular as the base material for solar cells in space, where size, efficiency and power are crucial. These substrates are used in the majority of the satellites launched today ... satellites that have turned the world into the global village it is now, using modern means of communication.
These rare germanium-materials are also descending to earth: using an array of lenses and mirrors, solar beams are concentrated on a tiny germanium wafer. This requires a lot less germanium and limits the cost difference with silicon, which is cheaper but less efficient.
Umicore has also developed a unique production method allowing for a significant reduction of the cost of producing very pure silicon, to be used in solar cell applications.

Vis-a-vis the limits imposed up to now by the miniature detectors, such as: difficult elimination of the background or cable of connection difficult to integrate in the applicatif environment, MINOS is the answer: a new series of opto-electronic detectors in versions energy reflex camera, reflex camera with elimination of the background, polarized barrier reflex camera or simple barrier.
Equipped with a ultra-compact case of dimensions 8 X 10,8 X 16,2 mm resistant to the shocks and vibrations, these detectors are smallest (size) market proposing an elimination of the adjustable background. They integrate a function Teach-in statics or dynamics, either integrated, or via an external entry. The response time is lower than 0,5 ms.
On the version reflex camera with elimination of the background, the low limits of size do not prevent the adjustment of the suppression of the background to 60 Misters.
An algorithm of suppression of the mutual disturbances authorizes the assembly close to several detectors, allowing their integration in reduced environments.
These detectors are equipped with an exit cables or connector off-set M8 4 poles; thanks to the alternatives left cable axial and left cable radial, the position of the cable is not any more one concern!

Innovative concept:
Consists in spraying a fluid (water or oil) at a pressure between 300 and 3500 bar (4,400 to 50,700 psi), depending on the material to be deburred.
It removes burrs left after the machining process, and allows cleaning of the surface of the parts. |

Robotized Deburring
You've heard the saying "deburring is a tedious job..." ‑ why not automate it?
Fastems' DBL (Deburring and Loading Cell) is a modular robot cell designed for deburring and automatic loading applications. Deburring, which often is a dusty, noisy, unconfortable and repetitive task becomes a thing of the past. And simultaneously, the deburring quality, which often varies significantly with manual deburring, can be consistant and easily maintained at the required level. The DBL can be used as a stand-alone unit or it can be integrated with a flexible manufacturing system (FMS).

The main advantages are numerous:
- The capacity to conform to the geometrical differences of pieces that are obtained with foundry or stamping processes and, therefore, that are not perfectly equal one to the other.
- The possibility of vary the working pressure according to the necessity to speed up the cycle time, making constant the final quality of the product, from the first to the last piece that is worked and optimizing the consumption of the tools.
- The possibility of working completely independent without the regular presence of an operator and therefore with a further reduction of the cost per hour of the system.
- Remarkable saving of the consumption material. |

Weigh cell MTC-ZER series cover the measuring range up to 50 g. They are applied in those areas where smallest weights at low piece counts have to be determined industrially. The major applications are 100% quality-control or the production-accompanying sampling-control in the pharmaceutical industry. Smallest dimensions, by separating the electronics box and mechanical system of the weigh cell, provide clearly advantages for the installation where space is limited.
