Stepper Motors
precision that moves.
Stepper motors are synchronic motors. The rotor follows an electrically charged magnetic field. The stepper motor uses an open loop control system as opposed to the servomotor. This means that position and the number of revolutions are known even without sensor technology by principle. In addition, stepper motors are highly reliable and long-lasting due to their precision and economical construction, even in exteme environments.

Schneider Electric Motion 3-phase stepper motors are extremely robust and maintenance-free. They carry out precise, incremental movements as controlled by a stepper motor drive. A stepper motor drive system consists of a stepper motor and a matching stepper motor drive. Maximum performance of the complete drive system requires the motor and the drive to be perfectly adapted to each other. Depending on the stepper motor drive, the motors can be operated at very high resolutions.
A complete range of options such as rotation monitoring and holding brake as well as robust planetary gearboxes with very little backlash extends the application range.
Schneider Electric Motion 3-phase stepper motors are available in standard and Ex versions (EEx d IIC T4).

When selecting your motor there are many parameters to consider including voltage and current available from your drive, speed, resolution, space and cost. The following notes may assist you in your selection of a suitable package:
For an application requiring a speed of less than 5rpm and torque of greater than 1Nm we suggest you consider a permanent magnet stepping motor fitted onto a gearbox. Where a speed of less than 5rpm and torque of less than 1Nm is required you can consider either a permanent magnet or hybrid stepping motor without a gearbox.

Hybrid stepper motors provide high resolution angular positioning and are good for applications requiring high repeatability and high torque in a small package size. Stepper motors provide excellent performance at low speeds. Positioning accuracy of +/-5% of the step angle means steppers are ideal for open loop control, but can be paired with an encoder to run closed loop for added accuracy.

When selecting your motor there are many parameters to consider including voltage and current available from your drive, speed, resolution, space and cost. The following notes may assist you in your selection of a suitable package:
For an application requiring a speed greater than 5rpm we suggest you consider a hybrid stepping motor. A gearbox will give additional output torque if required.
A hybrid stepping motor will offer high resolution which can be further enhanced by use of microstepping drives.

Hurst hybrid stepper motors offer many advantages over conventional stepper motor designs. With the 1.8° step angle, quality resolution can be achieved without external reduction. Rapid start, stop and reversal characteristics coupled with open loop operation make the Hybrid Stepper the motor of choice for many applications. This design provides high torque density which is desirable when space is a factor. The hybrid models are available in NEMA standard frame sizes of 17 and 23, with holding torque ranging up to 187 oz-in. Standard windings are 4 phase, unipolar. All models offer class B insulation.
