The typical "inside-out" brushless DC (BLDC) motor provides greater output power, higher operating speeds and cleaner, quieter operation than its brush-type counterparts. BLDC motors are ideal for sterile environments—since there are no brushes, no particulate is discharged. Because of their inherent reliability and long-term service life, BLDC motors can significantly contribute to lower overall cost of operation and maintenance.

Conventional DC motors use a stationary magnet with a rotating armature combining the commutation segments and brushes to provide automatic commutation. In comparison, the brushless DC motor is a reversed design: the permanent magnet is rotating whereas the windings are part of the stator and can be energized without requiring a commutator-and-brush system. Therefore this motor type achieves very long, trouble-free life even while operating at very high speeds.
Key Attributes:
- Frame sizes range from 12.7mm (0.5 in.) to 58mm (2.3 in.)
- Speeds up to 100 000 rpm

- Improved heat dissipation
- No detent torque
- Tipically used in application with variations of speed or load
- Typically used in incremental motion
Advantages:
- Ease of speed and position control
- Very long life, high reliability, insensitive to environment (no arcing), motor is dust free with reduced audible and electrical noise levels
- Overload capability
- Excellent velocity smoothness
- Very simple commutation circuitry
- Very precise speed and position control |

| Schneider Electric Motion‘s RECM motors are brushless DC motors that are constructed as electronically commutated 3-phase synchronous motors. The model offers high power delivery and dynamics in a compact design for the most diverse applications. Depending on the requirements, the motors feature a distinct or low self-holding torque, so that there often is no need for a holding brake. The motors can be equipped with various transmissions such as spur or planetary gears depending on the torque and service life requirements. Brushless DC motors are equipped with Hall sensors as standard. For higher positioning resolutions optional encoder systems can be supplied as an alternative. |

Electronically commutated internal rotor motors - Short but highly dynamic.
In automation, many applications are characterised by high dynamism and high torque at the same time. Spatial restrictions also mean that drives must be short, have a long service life and be maintenancefree, as replacing them can often be too expensive and time consuming. The new EC-i motors from maxon motor offer solutions that fit these requirements perfectly.
maxon's EC-i motors are designed as brushless, grooved internal rotor motors, the advantages being the rotor's low inertia, minimal detent, robust bearings and compact construction. The use of high-powered permanent magnets ensures high power density, providing great speed stability under load.
These motors are available in 40 mm diameter and in two lengths, namely
26 mm (50 Watt) and 36 mm (70 Watt). The modular system with gearheads, encoders and controllers from the maxon delivery program offers a large number of possible combinations.
EC-i motors are ideally suited for applications that require maximum dynamism in minimum space. Typical areas of application are robotics, industrial automation and security technology.

DC Torque Motors
The Direct Drive DC torque motor is a servo actuator which can be directly attached to the load it drives. It has a permanent magnet (PM) field and a wound armature which act together to convert electrical power to torque. This torque can then be utilized in positioning or speed control systems.
Permanent Magnet DC (PMDC) Motors
Pacific Scientific offers over 75 standard PMDC SCR and PWM rated, low voltage, wash down duty and explosion proof models from 1/8 to 3 HP (93 to 2240 W). Stock models plus many standards are UL Recognized or Listed. Most stock models are also CSA Certified. |
