A terminal is a portable or remote device linked to a computerized system and used for data capture or the control of industrial processes.
These devices are found in logistics for stock management or in commercial settings for payment transactions. In the industrial realm they are human-machine interfaces for the control of machinery.
Logistics models read bar codes or RFID chips. Direct or delayed data relay is by USB port, Bluetooth® or serial port. They can have an Ethernet or WiFi network connection. Such devices facilitate product flow control, production monitoring and stock management. Commercial models handle secure credit or debit card payments.
Access control terminals are found at parking lots and entry points blocked by retractable bollards or automatic gates. They are activated via a non-contact badge or keypad.
The term also refers to human-machine interfaces. These can take the form of a touchscreen or a box with controls and a display. The screen offers a wide angle of view and has sufficient brightness and contrast to be readable in strong light. Sturdiness is indicated by a protection rating. Some have a computer-type screen and keyboard, and may be equipped with potentiometers or encoders.
